For a hotel stay in Paganica, routes, churches and local traditions offer different points of interest. The “Conca aquilana” stage of the Ippovia Gran Sasso starts and ends in the town. Its history and art include the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and the Santuario della Madonna d’Appari; local traditions are reflected in the celebrations for Madonna d’Appari and the Sagra dei Fagioli. When planning your trip, it helps to ask a clear question: should your stay be shaped primarily by a route, historical themes or a festival date?

Distinguishing routes for your plans

The “Conca aquilana” stage of the Ippovia Gran Sasso starts and ends in Paganica. From there, it follows the Tratturo di Colle Paganica uphill to Filetto and descends back via the hamlet of Pescomaggiore. The route is therefore a circuit: the section to Filetto is uphill, and the return via Pescomaggiore is downhill. If you plan to take this stage, check the latest operating and route details beforehand.

Another route description is called “Destinazione Gran Sasso.” It starts either in L’Aquila city centre or at the A/24 motorway exit, passes through Paganica and the Tempera nature reserve, and ends in Assergi. The Parco Gran Sasso Monti della Laga is based there; Assergi is also a gateway to Gran Sasso d’Italia. The routes differ: the Ippovia stage is a circuit that starts and ends in Paganica, while “Destinazione Gran Sasso” runs from L’Aquila or the A/24 exit via Paganica to Assergi.

Churches and art history

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Paganica is documented in written records dating back to the 12th century; a consecration on 8 October 1195 is recorded. Between 1648 and 1655, the church was completely rebuilt in Baroque style. The early records and the consecration therefore contrast with a later, major building phase: the complete rebuilding took place several centuries after the medieval references.

The new wall of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta incorporates two medieval fragments. A pierced frieze has also been dated to the 12th century on the basis of stylistic comparisons; a pluteus also dates from that century. These details add further clues about the earlier building history to the sequence of medieval records and Baroque rebuilding.

Near Paganica, the Santuario della Madonna d’Appari lies between rocks and the Raiale stream. The sanctuary houses the painting “Madonna del Santissimo Rosario con i quindici misteri,” created by Pompeo Mausonio in 1596. Alongside the architectural history of Santa Maria Assunta, Paganica thus offers another point of art-historical interest, connected with the sanctuary’s distinctive location by the Raiale.

Local traditions

The traditional celebrations for Madonna d’Appari take place on the Tuesday after Easter and include a procession to the small sanctuary. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event date beforehand. The Sagra dei Fagioli is an old local tradition in Paganica and is associated with the local Slow Food Presidio. Its food offerings include stalls selling typical products. The procession and the Sagra represent different traditions: a religious celebration and a local food event.
