Poggio Picenze offers two distinct starting points for a trip: its architectural and local history, and walks along high-altitude trails. Its historic heritage includes a castle, several churches, a medieval merchant’s house, fountains, and a tradition of white-stone sculpture. The Sentieri delle tre pietre complement these cultural and historical attractions with an outdoor activity.

The castle and the oldest part of town

The castle is dated to around the year 1000. A document from 1173 describes it as a fortified castle with six towers, including a tall central tower. These two details serve different purposes: the dating refers to its presumed construction period, while the document records the castle’s appearance in its description. Today, the castle ruins stand in Piazza Castello, in the oldest part of Poggio Picenze, and serve as a viewpoint for visitors. Thus, the castle’s early dating and its role as a viewpoint come together at this site.

Churches from different periods

The churches reflect different construction periods, later modifications, and furnishings. The Chiesa di San Felice Martire was first built in the 12th century and received a Renaissance façade in the 16th century. Its three-aisled interior is in the Baroque-Classical style; it also contains 16th-century paintings of the Mysteries of the Rosary. The Chiesa della Visitazione was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its Romanesque-Aquilan façade features a high relief of the Crucifixion in the upper section. The history of the Chiesa di San Giuliano dates back to the beginning of the 15th century: it was built on the site of a small hospital that remained in operation until 1447. Together, these details show different historical aspects, from construction periods and façade design to the site’s former use.

Medieval house, fountain, and sculpture

The Casa Medievale dates from the 13th century and is a rare example in Abruzzo of a medieval merchant’s house. Its façade features a bricked-up so-called Porta del morto; the upper floor has a monoforium and a biforium. The house is thus described not only by its period, but also by specific features of its façade. The Fontana di San Rocco offers another architectural detail: it has two basins set into niches, with three small columns topped by capitals. Poggio Picenze also has an artistic tradition of white-stone sculpture. Local sculptors have created fountains and monuments throughout the town. For culture enthusiasts, the focus is therefore on both individual buildings with clearly identified details and a sculptural tradition found across the town.

Walks along the Sentieri delle tre pietre

The high-altitude trails in Valle del Campanaro offer another aspect to consider when planning a trip. There are more than 50 kilometers of walking trails there, known as the “Sentieri delle tre pietre.” They were recently renovated and fitted with special signage. This makes them a distinct attraction alongside the castle, churches, and historic houses. If you are looking for a hotel in Poggio Picenze, you can decide in advance whether the town’s architectural history or outdoor walks will shape your trip more. The cultural sites and trails described here offer different starting points, without requiring them to be part of a single walking tour.
