Stiffe and the Grotte di Stiffe

Stiffe can be explored through two specific themes: the Grotte di Stiffe and three hiking trails. The cave is what is known as a resurgence. The term describes a point where a river re-emerges at the surface after flowing underground. At Stiffe, this outlet is at the upper end of the gorge, above the small village of the same name. The geological description therefore encompasses both the underground section and the river’s re-emergence. You can understand the cave as a landform in which the river’s course is central to its name.

Waterfall and access

In a large chamber, a river plunges down as a waterfall, especially in winter. This feature adds a vivid image of the cave’s interior to its geological description. Access to the Grotte di Stiffe is possible only with an admission ticket, at set times, and accompanied by authorized guides. Check the visiting rules before your trip and factor the fixed entry times into your plans.

Hiking trails and their landmarks

The three hiking trails differ in their route features. Sentiero N. 1 “Biglietteria Grotte di Stiffe” first passes through an oak-dominated forest and then through the settlement of Stiffe. About 170 meters beyond the last houses, the trail reaches a viewpoint. The forest, settlement, and viewpoint provide several distinct reference points along this route.

Sentiero N. 2 “Fonteavignone” starts at the access plaza of the Grotte di Stiffe and first passes through a wooded area. The named starting point and the subsequent stretch through the forest are the main features of this route description. On Sentiero N. 3 “Fossa Campana,” a signed turnoff leads to a viewpoint overlooking Fossa Campana after about 200 meters. The trail returns to the ticket office of the Grotte di Stiffe and completes a loop around Fossa Campana. The routes therefore offer different points of reference for choosing a hike: N. 1 passes through forest and settlement to a viewpoint, N. 2 starts at the access plaza, and N. 3 combines a viewpoint with a loop. The distances are measured from different reference points.

V. Rivera Museum of Speleology

The V. Rivera Museum of Speleology has sections on paleontology, mineralogy, geology, and cave photography. Each discipline has a different focus: paleontology studies past life forms, mineralogy studies minerals, and geology studies the Earth; cave photography adds a visual perspective. The museum is currently being reorganized. If you would like to include it in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance.
