Campo Di Giove on the slopes of the Maiella
Accommodation in Campo Di Giove
Campo Di Giove lies at an altitude of 1,064 metres on the southwestern slopes of the Maiella. As the highest inhabited place in the entire Maiella National Park, the town combines its striking elevation with mountain pastures, pine forests and extensive beech woods known for their valuable flora and fauna. This landscape provides the setting for hikes and activities, while the townscape and architecture also reveal its medieval past.
Hiking Trails and Historic Traces
The Campo di Giove–Palena stage of the Sentiero della Libertà is considered its “centrepiece”. It leads from the historic centre at 1,070 metres to Guado di Coccia at 1,674 metres. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike. Another historic connection is trail P3 from Campo di Giove to Pacentro: it follows an old route of historical and religious significance that was already used by the local population before the year 1000.
Along P3 in Vacerita are the ruins of the church of S. Angelo dei Placunti, also known as S. Angelo di Plaquido. This links the route to a tangible testament to local history. The Madonna di Coccia sanctuary also has historical significance: its origins probably date back to the Early Middle Ages. The present-day Madonna di Coccia monastery was built by reconstructing a building on the ruins of an 18th-century structure.
Different trails offer nature enthusiasts a range of points of interest. After about three hours on trail P1, you reach a ridge at 2,390 metres and, shortly afterwards, the Fondo di Femmina Morta area, marked by sinkholes. At this high altitude, you can observe the park’s botanical rarities as well as wallcreepers, dotterels and Apennine chamois, among other species. Check current route conditions before setting out.
The Sentiero tematico dell’Orso is near Campo di Giove, by Lago Ticino, a small karst lake. This approximately four-kilometre circular trail is dedicated to the Marsican brown bear; you should also check current conditions before hiking this trail. Pine Cube offers another way to discover local wildlife: this purpose-built wood and glass structure allows you to observe typical animals of the area directly, including bears, wolves, roe deer and chamois, and offers an experience in nature.
Townscape and Culture
Campo di Giove’s medieval past is reflected not only in its historic trails but also in its townscape and architecture. Casa Quaranta houses the Museum of Peasant Traditions and Arts. It complements the outdoor sights with a look at rural culture and art. Together with the historic landmarks along the trails, the town offers a variety of ways to explore the area for travellers interested in both landscape and history.
Winter Slopes in the Maiella
Winter sports are also among the town’s attractions. The Campo di Giove ski area has the highest slopes in Abruzzo. They run from Tavola Rotonda at 2,350 metres through the Quartarana beech forest to the Campo di Giove valley station. The Porrara black run is rated as technically challenging: it descends from Serra Campanile at 1,787 metres over a length of more than 2,100 metres, with a vertical drop of 700 metres. Skiers can take a chairlift to the Guado di Coccia area, as well as a drag lift. Check seasonal operating times before travelling.
Planning Your Trip and Finding a Hotel
If you are looking for hotels in Campo Di Giove, you can start by considering whether hiking, local history or winter sports will be the focus of your stay. The trails described above differ in their specific features: P1 focuses on altitude and wildlife observation at high elevations, while the Sentiero tematico dell’Orso is a circular trail by a karst lake with a connection to the Marsican brown bear. For ski days, the elevation of the slopes and seasonal operating times are important planning considerations.
Campo di Giove is also a starting point for numerous guided hikes and activities exploring Maiella National Park; dates may vary. TUA bus services from Chieti, Pescara and Sulmona serve the town, with a stop there. If you plan your trip around a guided activity or bus service, check the relevant dates or current routes and timetables in advance.
