Gagliano Aterno – Castle, Culture and Mountain Landscape
Accommodation in Gagliano Aterno
Gagliano Aterno combines traces of its architectural history with natural history and landscape themes. The castle and Fontana Piazza del Popolo mark specific points in history; the Monastero di Santa Chiara and a tradition associated with the Cammino di Francesco add a cultural perspective. The Museo dell'orso, its location in the Sirente mountain range and hiking trail 18 offer further topics to consider when planning your trip.
Castle and Fontana Piazza del Popolo
The castle of Gagliano Aterno was extensively remodelled from 1328 onwards by Isabella Acquaviva, the mother of Count Pietro I of Celano. At the same time, it has retained its 15th-century forms. Its architectural features include a central building with biforate windows, a large portico, traces of the walls and a round tower. The castle therefore offers several specific points of reference for considering its architectural form and the different periods reflected in it.
Another precisely dated structure is the Fontana Piazza del Popolo. Isabella d’Acquaviva built it in 1344. Three niches with pointed arches and a watering trough define the structure. Alongside the castle’s substantial building, the fountain draws attention to a different kind of architectural design: its niches, arches and trough.
Monastery and Franciscan tradition
The Monastero di Santa Chiara was founded before 1286 and, according to historical sources, given to the Poor Clares. The Cammino di Francesco in Abruzzo also links Gagliano Aterno to a historical account: stage 8 runs from here to Castelvecchio Subequo. According to local tradition, the account of this stage says that between 1216 and 1222 Francis of Assisi stayed as a guest of the Counts of Celano at the castle of Gagliano Aterno. If you plan to hike this stage, check the latest route details, as they may change.
Museo dell'orso
The Museo dell'orso is located in the Convento di Santa Chiara in Gagliano Aterno. It displays a stuffed Marsican brown bear, which was found dead in good condition in the Sirente-Velino Regional Nature Park in 1995. An educational trail, a museum diorama and information panels explain the ecosystem of the Sirente-Velino area as well as the region’s geological and morphological features. This brings a specific animal specimen together with a broader view of the natural environment.
Landscape, hiking trail and surroundings
Gagliano Aterno lies in the southern part of the Sirente mountain range, on a hill that slopes down towards the Valle Subequana. The surrounding area is characterised by beech and pine forests. Hiking trail 18 starts in Gagliano Aterno and ends at Fonte dell'Acqua. Before setting out, check the latest park information, as trail status and conditions may change.
A recurring festival is another distinctive feature of the town. On 17 January, Gagliano Aterno celebrates the Feast of Fuoco e canti in onore di Sant'Antonio Abate. It includes satirical performances in musical and theatrical form, symbolic fire, foods believed to offer protection and good fortune, traditional offerings, stornelli and songs. Those interested in local festival traditions will find a specific point of reference here when planning their trip.
Nearby, on the Baullo plateau, which can be reached from Gagliano Aterno, visible remains of the church of Santa Scolastica have been preserved. This nearby point of interest extends the view of historical traces beyond the town’s buildings.
