Capestrano sits on a hill above the valley of the Tirino River. This setting and its historic buildings shape the character of the town. Those interested in history will find several points of interest here: a castle above the town, churches with multiple building phases, and the site where a significant stone figure was found below the town.

Castello Piccolomini above the town

Castello Piccolomini towers over Capestrano with two cylindrical towers and a square tower. The castle was rebuilt as a residence in 1465. Its distinctive silhouette is as much a part of the townscape as its elevated position overlooking the Tirino Valley. The three towers give the building a clearly defined form, while the date places its reconstruction in the history of the town.

The Tirino and its springs

Below Capestrano, the Tirino rises from three springs: Presciano, Il Lago, and Capo d’Acqua. The tourist trail in the Distretto Valle del Tirino runs from Bussi sul Tirino to Capestrano.

On the Tirino River, the municipality of Capestrano allows visitors to book an outing using their own canoe or kayak. A reservation is required to participate; the municipal booking service covers one canoe or kayak per booking. Check the applicable booking rules before your trip. This helps you take the requirements for the outing into account when planning, without conflating a river visit with the trail.

Churches between Capestrano and Presciano

About six kilometres from Capestrano, in the direction of Bussi sul Tirino, stands the Chiesa di San Pietro ad Oratorium. The surviving church dates back to the rebuilding of a monastic complex in the 12th century, which was founded in the 8th century. Inside is a 13th-century ciborium. The building therefore reflects several distinct historical periods: the founding of the complex, its later reconstruction, and the medieval ciborium.

In Presciano, the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Loreto stands near the Presciano spring, one of the Tirino’s three springs. This links the church to a specific point in the river’s spring landscape. Visitors can distinguish the Church of San Pietro ad Oratorium by its approximate distance and direction from Capestrano, while Santa Maria di Loreto is identified by its proximity to the Presciano spring.

Il Guerriero di Capestrano

Il Guerriero di Capestrano was discovered by chance in the summer of 1934, while a vineyard below the town was being worked. The figure represents Nevio Pompuledio and dates to the 6th–5th centuries BC. It was carved from a single block of limestone and stands 209 centimetres tall without its base. The height given explicitly refers to the figure without its base.

Convento francescano di San Giovanni

The Franciscan monastery, Convento francescano di San Giovanni, was built in 1447. Its library preserves volumes and manuscripts, including a papal bull dated 18 April 1262. The monastery’s construction date and the date of the bull refer to different historical contexts: one dates the building, while the other identifies an item in the preserved collection. The library thus complements the building’s history with a specific reference to the writings handed down over time.

Capestrano offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: its elevated position above the Tirino Valley, the castle, the landscape of springs, and historic sites, each with its own story. When looking for a hotel in Capestrano, consider which of these themes will interest you most during your stay.
