Verrecchie offers points of interest for a trip focused on the history of mills, rural culture and a variety of routes. The old watermill lies at the foot of Monte Padiglione, on the Imele River; several route descriptions include the village or the mill as a starting point or waypoint.

Watermill and rural history

The recently restored old watermill of Verrecchie stands on the Imele. It was once an economic hub for the residents of numerous surrounding villages. Here, the history of the mill can be connected with the history of rural life in Abruzzo: the Museo della civiltà contadina is housed in the restored mill and introduces visitors to the region’s traditional rural occupations and customs.

The museum displays photographs and equipment, along with manuscripts, documents, maps and books on local history. Different forms of remembrance are brought together here: pictures and tools illustrate rural activities, while the written collections record local history from a variety of perspectives. If you are interested in the everyday and working history of Abruzzo, the museum offers a tangible point of reference for this part of your trip.

The source of the Imele and the Ovido

You can reach the source of the Imele River by taking the road to the left of the old mill. There, water emerges between the rocks and flows on to the mill. A visit to the source thus complements the mill visit by showing the course of the water. The Imele is also part of a wider landscape: along its course, the river passes through Natura 2000 sites and protected areas such as the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park.

Another natural attraction is the Ovido di Verrecchie, also known as the “Pozzo dei Piccioni.” This 100-metre-high shaft was formed by a 30-metre waterfall on the Capacqua River and is inhabited by bats. The Capacqua rises in the mountains near Cappadocia. The two waterside locations therefore have distinct characteristics: at the source of the Imele, water emerges between rocks and flows towards the mill; the Ovido was shaped by the Capacqua’s waterfall.

Routes with different destinations

Itinerario n. 4 starts at the mill in Verrecchie and leads to the ruins of the Rocca on Monte a Corte, at an elevation of 1,100 metres. The route also passes close to the source of the Imele. The mill as a starting point and the Rocca ruins as a destination are therefore both central to this hike.

An excursion to Monte Padiglione starts and ends in Verrecchie. It passes over Passo delle Fossette and climbs along a scenic ridge overlooking the Valle della Dogana. Compared with Itinerario n. 4, this hike has a different focus: the pass and ridge are part of its route, whereas Itinerario n. 4 leads to the Rocca ruins. Another route, “Non solo canyoning: per l'antico mulino al pozzo dell'Ovido,” runs from Petrella Liri to Verrecchie and near the sources of the Imele. It is described as following a road at first, then a gravel track.

The Cammino di San Tommaso also passes through Verrecchie. On its way from Cappadocia to Tagliacozzo, it leads to the mill in the hamlet, continues through the village towards Piccola Svizzera, and then carries on to Tagliacozzo. These routes offer different points of interest for your stay: the mill and the Rocca, a pass and ridge, or the Cammino’s route through Verrecchie.
