Balsorano: Historic Sites and Culture
Accommodation in Balsorano
Balsorano brings together evidence from different periods: from Castello Piccolomini to the medieval town centre of Balsorano Vecchio, as well as churches, chapels and a museum devoted to the history of the Marsican people. If you are planning a stay, you will find useful points of reference here for understanding the town’s cultural history and religious traditions.
Castle and medieval town centre
Castello Piccolomini stands on a rise on the left bank of the Liri, near Valle Roveto. Its construction began at the behest of Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini in the 15th century, around 1460. The layout is an irregular pentagon, with a massive round tower at each corner. This basic form and the towers give the castle a distinctive architectural appearance.
In Balsorano Vecchio, parts of the medieval town plan have been preserved, with lanes and narrow streets. Porta San Martino was one of the town’s four gates. Together with the named church ruins and the Chiesa di San Rocco, they offer a picture of the different elements of the historic centre, without belonging to a single building complex.
Churches and religious traditions
The Chiesa di San Rocco is in Balsorano Vecchio. Its altar is set in a circular niche adorned with two paintings on either side; one of them depicts San Rocco. The saint is the patron saint of Balsorano Vecchio, and his feast is celebrated on 15 August.
The remains of the medieval church of Santa Brigida are also in Balsorano Vecchio. The ruins of the medieval church and hospice of Sant'Antonio are also located there; it served as a hospice or shelter for people in need. The place names and different functions help distinguish these religious landmarks: a church, another church ruin and the remains of a church that also served as a hospice stand side by side within the historical context.
An annual Assunta procession begins on the evening of 2 August at San Rocco in Balsorano Vecchio and proceeds to SS.ma TrinitĂ in Balsorano Nuovo. On 15 August, the image of the Assunta returns to San Rocco in a solemn procession. If you would like to plan a trip around these dates, check the event schedule in advance.
The Eremo di Sant'Angelo is a cave sanctuary at an altitude of 917 metres above Vallone di Sant'Angelo. There are three chapels inside the cave. One is dedicated to the Madonna dello Spirito Santo and contains a painting dated 5 May 1533. The cave complex and this precisely dated work of art are the main points of interest here.
Architecture, art and local history
The Chiesa Madonna delle Grazie has a circular exterior plan and a cylindrical tower that serves as an apse. Its surviving parts include the circular apse, with its intact altar, the nave and the dome. Next to the church stands a Renaissance tower that served as a mill from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Its former use adds a function distinct from that of the church building to the story of the site’s architecture.
The Convento di San Francesco houses several objects with dates of art-historical interest: a marble high altar with an antependium decorated with mother-of-pearl from the early 18th century, a crucifix from 1725 and a wooden statue of Saint Pasquale from the 15th century. The old railway station building houses the Museo della pastorizia. It documents the spontaneous art and activities of the Marsican people throughout history.
Routes and planning your stay
The Via delle Grotte (montana) starts in Balsorano Vecchio and runs through the valley, past Collepiano, to Rifugio Sambucito. The InCastro – sentieri di pietra project connects the municipalities of Balsorano, San Vincenzo Valle Roveto and Morino. The two offerings are described differently: a specific route is given for the Via delle Grotte, while InCastro is described as a project connecting municipalities.
Balsorano Vecchio is connected to National Road 82 by a road less than two kilometres long. The historic areas, religious buildings and routes mentioned here offer different themes to consider when planning a stay. You can decide whether to focus on architecture, religious history or the connections described here.
