If you are planning a hotel stay in Pescocostanzo, culture, crafts, nature and winter sports can each offer a different reason to choose this destination. The town brings together sacred collections and architectural history with craft traditions that are still maintained today. Also nearby are the Bosco di Sant'Antonio, highlighted by the national park, a trail classified for experienced hikers, and activities at the snow park. Deciding which of these themes you want to focus on is a useful starting point for your decision.

Museums and their different focuses

The Museo della Basilica in the Collegiata Santa Maria del Colle preserves goldsmith’s work, sculptures and sacred furnishings from the church. The Museo del merletto a tombolo displays antique lace from private collections and church furnishings, including pieces from the 18th century. The difference is clear when choosing a theme: the first museum focuses on sacred objects and crafts, while the second features lace from private and church contexts. This lets you distinguish between the collections according to whether you are more interested in sacred works and sculptures or textile crafts.

Crafts as a continuing tradition

Pescocostanzo’s long-standing craft traditions, which are still maintained today, include filigree goldsmithing, bobbin lace, wrought ironwork for household items and wood carving. These crafts differ in their materials and techniques: filigree work and lace sit alongside household ironwork and carved wood. The cultural focus therefore extends beyond individual collections to encompass several crafts. If you are interested in local culture, this gives you another perspective alongside the sacred objects and architectural history.

Architectural history across different periods

The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate dates back to the 13th century and stands on the original settlement of Pescocostanzo, called Peschio or Pesco. The church of Santa Maria del Suffragio dei Morti has a 17th-century portal and a wooden coffered ceiling. Its walnut altar was completed by Ferdinando Mosca in 1716. The former monastery of Santa Scolastica was built in 1624 to a design by Cosimo Fanzago. These details refer to different points in time: the origins of a church, dated architectural features and the construction of a former monastery. The town’s architectural history therefore cannot be reduced to a single period.

Forest and hiking trail

The Parco Nazionale della Majella identifies the Bosco di Sant'Antonio as a biodiversity hotspot; it is home to centuries-old beech and maple trees. The Sentiero O1 starts in Pescocostanzo, crosses open meadows on the eastern slope of Monte Rotella and reaches the Bosco di Sant'Antonio after crossing the S.P. 55. The route thus runs from the meadows into the forest. It is classified for experienced hikers. Take this classification into account when choosing a route, and distinguish it from a simple statement of the trail’s destination: the route described here includes the stretch across the meadows, the road crossing and entry into the forest.

Snow park, lessons and ski bus

The Pesco Swup Snowpark is also accessible to the public on foot from the base of the lifts. It has three lines of varying difficulty: an L/M line, an S line and a Jib line. The Scuola Sci Pescocostanzo 3000 offers freeride and freestyle lessons. These details provide two different points of reference: the difficulty ratings apply to the snow park lines, while the ski school offers the specified types of lessons.

When planning your accommodation, also bear in mind the restriction on the ski bus service: it is exclusively for customers of the ski school and runs between their accommodation and the ski slopes. The public footpath from the base of the lifts to the snow park and this ski bus service are therefore separate options with different conditions. If you are focusing on winter sports, keep this distinction in mind when planning.
