Discover Meta: elevation, history and hiking
Accommodation in Meta
Meta lies at an altitude of 1,051 metres and is the only village in the Valle Roveto above 1,000 metres. Its elevation is a concrete point of comparison when considering places in the valley. The destination is also shaped by history and activities: from the ruins of the former settlement and the Church of the Santissima TrinitĂ to a hiking route and a technically demanding climbing area.
Local history and architecture
Before the 1915 earthquake, Meta stood on a hill; today, only ruins remain there. The former hilltop location and the surviving ruins are an important point of reference for the history of the village. Another historic stop is the Church of the Santissima TrinitĂ : after the earthquake, it was relocated between 1946 and 1951 and rebuilt in the new town centre.
The façade also has distinctive architectural features. It has a simple gabled form, a pyramidal staircase and a large entrance portal. Together with its relocation and reconstruction, these features offer a way to consider both the church’s design and its history. The Castello di Meta represents a much older historical layer: in 1070, the Counts of the Marsi donated the castle to the monks of Montecassino.
Festivals and local products in Meta
Meta’s municipal calendar lists the Festa della S.S. Trinità in June and the Festa dell’Assunta on 15 August. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for your travel period in advance. This makes the relevant calendar entry a concrete starting point for your planning.
Local products include cheese and prosciutto, noted for their distinctive aroma and flavour. This adds a culinary aspect to the village’s historical and active pursuits. These products are part of the village’s character; the hiking and climbing information, by contrast, provides specific details about route distance, time required or technical demands.
Compare hiking and climbing
The Zompo lo Schioppo–Meta route passes the Hermitage of the Madonna del Cauto. It is 12.5 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 5.5 hours. Together, the distance and time give you a concrete framework for fitting the hike into your day’s plans. The route is thus described using two measurable figures, without implying anything about its level of difficulty.
The Civitella Roveto–Meta climbing area calls for different skills: the climbing style is very technical and requires finger strength and secure footwork. A description dated 29 November 2020 places the access point at Meta’s sports field; from there, a path of about 500 metres leads to a fork. Check climbing conditions and equipment locally. In comparison with the hiking route, climbing is defined by its technical demands and the described access, while the hiking information gives the route length and duration.
Big Bench No. 354
Meta has a Big Bench belonging to the Big Bench Community Project, numbered 354. Bar La Piazza in Meta is the stamping and passport point for this Big Bench. If you would like to use the stamp or passport, check in advance whether this is possible on the date of your visit. This lets you plan separately for visiting the bench and stopping at the designated stamping point.
