Pacentro’s historic buildings and customs span references dating back to the Middle Ages as well as recurring traditions. Hiking and winter sports can also be part of your trip planning. If you’re looking for a hotel in Pacentro, you can tailor your stay to your interests in architectural history, culture or mountain activities.

Buildings and History

Castello Caldoresco is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Abruzzo. Its earliest historical references appear in the 11th-century Chronicon Casauriense. The castle thus offers a tangible point of reference for Pacentro’s early history.

The churches also reflect different eras. Chiesa di San Marcello was founded in 1047 and rebuilt and reopened after a fire in 1166. Chiesa della Madonna di Loreto probably dates from the late 16th century; its history is closely linked to the Corsa degli Zingari. The rural Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli was probably built towards the end of the 16th century. Chiesa di San Marco dates from the late 17th century. It houses an old fresco of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori.

Traditions and Event Dates

The Corsa degli Zingari takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. Its roots lie in the customs and myths of the Peligni; it later became associated with the Christian cult of the Madonna di Loreto. When planning your trip, it is advisable to check the event date for your chosen year.

Another event is I CALDORESCHI nell'Anno del Signore 1450: this six-day historical reenactment takes place in the third week of August and presents scenes depicting medieval customs. Pacentro’s Christmas market runs until mid-December. Stalls run by local artists and craftspeople can also be found at historic house entrances, in alleyways and in squares. The events therefore take place at different times of the year.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Scenery

Hiking trail Q5 starts in Pacentro on S.S. 487 at an elevation of 850 metres. It ends at Mandra Castrata, where it meets trail Q6 at 1,725 metres. Along the way, it passes through varied landscapes, from beech forests to the summit meadows of the Morrone.

Passo San Leonardo offers another point of reference. The mountain pass, at 1,282 metres, separates Valle dell'Orta in the Pescara area from the Sulmona side of the Majella. The slopes around the pass are suitable for cross-country skiing and ski mountaineering. Hikes to Monte Morrone and Monte Amaro can also start from there. The starting points described therefore differ: Q5 starts in Pacentro, while the hikes mentioned can begin at Passo San Leonardo.

More Traces of Local Life

Near Castello Caldoresco is I canaje, an old public washhouse. La preta tonna, also known as pietra dello scandalo, is a large, hollowed-out stone once used as a measure for a tomolo of grain. One tomolo was equivalent to 56 litres.

Since 2015, the entrance to Palazzo La Rocca has served as a museum space. The museum displays a Franciscan nativity scene by artist Peppino Avolio. Another trace of history can be found at the Balze del Morrone: the rock paintings there are ochre-coloured figures on a narrow ledge at an elevation of 680 metres.

Past Events

Individual past editions also offer a glimpse into Pacentro’s cultural life. At the 2018 edition of the living nativity scene, the route wound through the village’s alleyways to the area next to Castello Caldoresco. That edition featured craft workshops and establishments where visitors could sample local specialties such as chestnuts, sweets, pizzas and gnocchi.

At its 17th edition on 5 August 2024, the food event Pecure allu cutture revived Pacentro’s historic connection with pastoral activity and mountain landscapes. This particular edition is a past event; when planning a trip, refer to the latest event dates.
