Barisciano combines medieval architecture with trails through forests and mountain landscapes. The town lies at an altitude of 940 metres on the slopes of a wooded hill; ridges, picturesque valleys and inner plateaus shape the surrounding landscape. Castle ruins and churches tell the story of its architecture, while trails lead to religious sites or offer opportunities to observe nature. Depending on your interests, you can combine history, forests and nature during your stay.

Landscape and plant life

The short “Nella Selva dei Frati” trail passes through an oak forest and offers opportunities for birdwatching. In the San Colombo complex, the park’s Botanical Garden cultivates ex situ the most representative plant species of the protected area. The Museo del Fiore explains the variety of plants that grow in the park’s protected area. The Herbarium Apenninicum at the Centro di Ricerche Floristiche dell’Appennino contains 65,000 plant specimens; the collection may change over time.

The Museo del Fiore is located in the San Colombo complex, which also houses the park’s visitor information desk. The complex is accessible to people with disabilities. Check the information about the visitor facility before your visit, as operational details may change.

Barisciano Castle and churches

The surviving remains of Barisciano Castle are considered an important example of medieval fortifications in Abruzzo. Near the castle, the Chapel of San Rocco preserves 16th-century frescoes. Santa Maria di Capo di Serra, also known as Madonna del Buon Consiglio, is considered Barisciano’s oldest church; its existence is documented as far back as 1300.

The Church of San Flaviano was rebuilt in 1730 after being damaged by the 1703 earthquake. It preserves a baptismal font dated 1571. The former Church of the Immaculate Conception of the “Trinità” was built in the 17th century by Prince Giulio Cesare Caracciolo as a family church beside his palace. It is closed; its rectangular floor plan and four altars are part of its historic form. Barisciano’s present-day fountain was built in 1876 under Mayor Giulio Blasetti.

Trails with different destinations

The Via Mariana is a prayer trail surrounded by forest that leads to the Chapel of San Rocco, dedicated to Saint Roch. The Sentiero dei Rifugi Montani starts in Barisciano’s central square and climbs to the former monastery of San Colombo at an altitude of 1,088 metres; a park information centre is located there. The destinations are quite different: one is a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch, the other a former monastery with the park’s information centre. For nature observation, the short “Nella Selva dei Frati” trail passes through the oak forest and offers opportunities to watch birds.

A seasonal event

The Sagra della Patata traditionally takes place on the last weekend of August. The event focuses on potatoes and their use in cooking. Check that year’s programme before travelling if you would like to plan your stay around the festival.
