Explore Yvelines on foot, by bike or on horseback. Its landscape brings together valleys, the Seine corridor, gently rolling farmland and the Rambouillet forest massif. Natural and agricultural areas make up 85 percent of the département; forest areas cover 70,000 hectares. A trip through Yvelines is therefore not defined by just one landscape, but by a varied selection of trails and natural areas.

Walking, Cycling and Horse Riding

Yvelines has 1,294 kilometres of footpaths for walking. Six GR long-distance trails, two GRP regional trails and more than 40 PR local trails cross the département. The Parc naturel régional de la Vallée de Chevreuse also offers nearly 750 kilometres of trails. These figures give an idea of the range of walking options: you can choose your route based on the landscape or the trail network you want, rather than limiting the region to a single walking route.

For cycling, Yvelines has 850 kilometres of cycling infrastructure. The cycling plan also includes 150 kilometres of routes along the Seine. Walking and cycling offer different ways to experience the valleys, forest areas and Seine corridor. Guided outings on horseback, by pony or in a carriage are available in the Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, for either half a day or a full day. Providers and schedules may change, so check current dates and availability before making plans.

Natural Areas and Landscapes

The valleys of Yvelines include wetlands, meadows and calcareous grasslands. The Espaces naturels sensibles cover a total of 2,800 hectares, much of which is open to the public. If you are interested in these areas, the interactive map lists 24 sites and provides information on how to get there and explore them. This makes it easier to choose a natural destination without treating every place or trail as the same.

When planning your route, it is worth keeping the specific landscape in mind: the département brings together river valleys, agricultural plains and extensive forests. This means a day spent in nature can take many different forms. The natural areas map is a practical starting point; when choosing, check which of the listed places suits your plans.

Châteaux, Gardens and Collections

History and culture can also give a stay in Yvelines its own character. The gardens of Versailles were created and laid out by André Le Nôtre from 1661. The Château de Rambouillet served in turn as a royal, imperial and presidential residence. The Château de la Madeleine was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. Each of these places tells a different part of the region’s history and offers a specific point of interest for visitors interested in history.

The collections at the Musée d'Archéologie nationale on the Domaine national du château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye span from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. They are housed alongside the royal château and gardens. Access to some galleries may be restricted at times; check visitor information if particular collections are important to your plans. This makes it possible to tailor a cultural itinerary to the periods and places that interest you most.

Planning Your Trip and Choosing a Hotel

The Tram T13 is another useful point of reference for getting around: it is connected to more than 20 major bus routes in Yvelines. Check current travel conditions before setting out. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: walks and natural areas, or historic châteaux, gardens and collections.
