The built-up village of Châteaufort stretches from the Plateau de Saclay to the Mérantaise Valley. Its natural landscape, medieval village centre and historic buildings offer different focal points for a stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Châteaufort, you can first decide whether landscape, local history, a hike or the Foire Saint-Simon will shape your visit.

Natural Landscapes in Domaine d’Ors

The protected natural area of Domaine d’Ors is located in the commune of Châteaufort and covers around 25 hectares. Its landscape includes wooded slopes and wet meadows in the valley bottoms. The Mérantaise winds through the area for almost two kilometres. The natural area is freely accessible to pedestrians; please stay on the paths. Wooded slopes, wet valley meadows and the river create different landscape features throughout the area.

Local History and Cultural Heritage

An interactive guide offers a tour of the medieval village centre of Châteaufort, starting from Place Saint-Christophe. It includes videos for each point of interest.

Châteaufort’s motte is known as “La Motte”. It has a diameter of 35 metres, an area of 1,500 square metres and a height of 9 metres. It is one of the best-preserved mottes in Île-de-France. The Église Saint-Christophe de Châteaufort was built between 1838 and 1840 in the Napoléon III style.

The Chapelle du domaine d’Ors was the château’s oratory. It is no longer in use and has been renovated by the commune. The Lavoir de Châteaufort, near the Mérantaise, was for a long time a meeting place for local women, who washed their laundry there. It has been restored and is considered a notable feature of the area’s vernacular heritage, as well as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the commune. Two different former uses therefore stand side by side: the château oratory and the Lavoir as a communal washhouse near the Mérantaise.

The Moulin d’Ors was restored by the Parc in 1995. It is considered a high-quality heritage site and is one of the last mills in this condition. It is visible from public areas.

Hiking and the Annual Calendar

The hike “Les mille et une facettes du village de Châteaufort” starts at the Moulin d’Ors, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, is 4.5 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 70 metres. Its duration, distance and elevation gain give you several useful points of reference for fitting the outing into your day. The two options differ in focus: a tour of the village centre with videos, or a hike with a stated distance, duration and elevation gain.

The Foire Saint-Simon takes place every year on the third Sunday in October.
