Gambais brings together three clearly distinct themes for planning a trip: designated natural areas, a local route for pedestrians and cyclists, and historic cultural heritage. The commune is part of the Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse; it joined the park’s communes in 2010. If you are looking for a hotel in Gambais, you can start by deciding whether nature, activity or history will be the focus of your stay. The places and routes below differ considerably: from a specific amphibian habitat to a route for sustainable mobility, a long-distance hiking trail and historic buildings.

Protected Nature and Biodiversity

Four ZNIEFF sites of ecological, faunal and floral interest have been designated in Gambais. There are also two protected areas outside Natura 2000. The protected natural areas designated in Gambais are home to at least 932 species, including 122 protected species. The ZNIEFF designation brings together ecological, faunal and floral interests; the species figures refer to the protected natural areas as a whole.

One specific example is the ZNIEFF Tourbière de l’étang des Bruyères. It includes a pond in a peat-filled valley bottom. There is a good population of common toads there; the alpine newt also breeds there. The figures refer to different scales: the species numbers apply to the protected natural areas as a whole, while the amphibian details relate specifically to the Tourbière.

Local Route and Long-Distance Trail

One specific option for getting active locally is the environmentally friendly route along Avenue de Neuville. Completed in 2018, it is separated from motor traffic. The route is 4.2 kilometres long and connects Château de Neuville with the junction with departmental road 179. It is intended for pedestrians, with or without pushchairs, people with reduced mobility, and cyclists.

For a longer hike, the GR®22 passes through Gambais: Section 1, from Paris to La Chapelle-Montligeon, is 253 kilometres long. The difference in scale is useful for planning: the local route is 4.2 kilometres, while the long-distance trail section is 253 kilometres. Check the GR®22 route details before setting out.

Château de Neuville and Saint-Aignan Church

Château de Neuville was rebuilt in 1756 by the Marquise Agnès de Revol. The château offers paid group tours throughout the year by prior arrangement; check the details before your trip. Today, the château is occasionally rented out for weddings, receptions and audiovisual filming.

Saint-Aignan Church, in the hamlet of the same name in Gambais, was built in 996 by Robert the Pious on the ruins of a small chapel. Its barrel vault, a lengthwise, arched ceiling, depicts the sky and its constellations. The dates indicate two distinct historical points: the church’s construction in 996 and the château’s reconstruction in 1756.
