Cernay-La-Ville: Hiking Trails, Abbey History and Art
Accommodation in Cernay-La-Ville
Cernay-La-Ville offers several specific points to consider when planning your trip: circular walks, the architectural history of Église Saint-Brice, the former abbey and the history of landscape painting. The walking routes vary in duration, difficulty and theme. You can start by considering how much time you would like to set aside for a walk and whether you are most interested in nature, history or geology.
Compare circular walks by time and theme
The route “La carrière des Maréchaux, sentier pédagogique” is a very easy 4.1-kilometre circular walk. It takes about an hour and starts at the Maréchaux car park. Its themes range from archaeology and history to fauna, flora and geology.
The easy circular walk “La vallée du Ru des Vaux entre Cernay et Senlisse” is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It starts and ends at the car park of the Centre culturel Léon-Germain Pelouse. Fauna and flora are the main themes of this walk.
The moderately difficult circular walk “Au fil des Moulins” takes about three hours. It covers 6.8 kilometres and starts and ends in the car park next to the wall of the Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay in Cernay-La-Ville. Here too, fauna and flora are the main focus. Comparing the three circular walks, the stated durations range from about one to about three hours; the easy 4.5-kilometre route falls between them in terms of time.
Information on these three municipal routes was updated in July 2022. Check the route information again before setting out. Another route, “Paysages pittoresques des Vaux de Cernay”, starts and ends in Cernay-La-Ville, in the car park next to the perimeter wall of the Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay.
Wetlands and the landscape of the Vaux de Cernay
Les Vaux de Cernay is a designated protected site. Its wetlands include ponds, meadows and reed beds, and are considered especially rich in ecological terms. These landscape features add a distinct perspective on nature to the themes of the circular walks. If you would like to focus particularly on fauna and flora during a walk, two route descriptions explicitly highlight this theme. The “La carrière des Maréchaux” walk also covers archaeology, history and geology.
Abbey history, church and landscape painting
The Domaine de l'ancienne abbaye des Vaux de Cernay is a medieval monastic complex. Baroness Nathalie de Rothschild remodelled it in the Neo-Gothic style in 1875. This makes it possible to distinguish the complex’s medieval origins from its later 19th-century transformation as two separate phases of its history.
Église Saint-Brice also offers a clearly defined historical reference point: its main construction phase took place in the third quarter of the 16th century. Since 20 June 1928, the church has been listed as a “Monument historique”. Cernay-La-Ville also attracted landscape painters in the 19th century. Léon Germain Pelouse founded the “Colonie des peintres de Cernay” — another way to explore the town’s history, alongside its religious and monastic architecture.
Le Petit Moulin: exhibition and visitor information
Since 2018, Le Petit Moulin des Vaux de Cernay has held the Île-de-France “Patrimoine d'intérêt régional” designation. A scenographically designed exhibition presents the history of the Vaux through multimedia and audiovisual elements. On display are original paintings by landscape artists, sketches, and objects and tools from everyday life at the time.
Le Petit Moulin is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has an induction loop for hearing-impaired visitors with compatible equipment. Tours in sign language are available by reservation. Accessible parking spaces are marked at the museum entrance. This information can help you plan your visit around the available access and communication facilities; reservations are required for tours in sign language.
Guided tours in the Vaux de Cernay
The regional nature park offers guided full-day and half-day tours in the Vaux de Cernay throughout the year. Themes include discovering the Vaux de Cernay and Le Petit Moulin, the mills, and the landscape painters. Alongside the circular walks described above, there are also guided options with different areas of focus. If you would like to plan one of these tours, it is worth checking the dates and the theme of each offering.
