Compare circular walks in Sonchamp

The three circular walks in Sonchamp differ mainly in length. The Circuit de Louareux is 5.3 kilometres long; the Circuit de Jarrieux and the Circuit du Château de Pinceloup are each 5.5 kilometres long. All three are considered very easy and take about an hour. The shortest trail is 200 metres shorter than the other two, so given the similar duration, you can choose based on distance.

The Circuit du Château de Pinceloup begins and ends at the car park on the D 936, next to the tennis courts opposite the pond. The route is marked in blue and white and is regularly checked by the regional park’s active mobility technician. This circular walk therefore has both an approximate time estimate and a specific starting and ending point.

Wildlife watching and forest trails

Espace Rambouillet is a wildlife park open to the public; 98 percent of its area lies within Sonchamp. The ForĂŞt Sauvage offers seven kilometres of trails within the park. Visitors can spot forest animals such as deer and wild boar there. Operating details may change; check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Building history and historic sites

The Église Saint-Georges in Sonchamp is listed as a historic monument. Its main construction phases date from the 11th, 13th, 16th and 19th centuries. The church therefore brings together several clearly distinct periods of architectural history. The Château de Pinceloup also offers a specific architectural reference point: it was built of brick and stone in a style typical of the reign of Louis XIII.

Another historic building is the Grand Lavoir on the Rémarde. It was built in 1889 and restored around 1950. Together with the church and the château, it shows that Sonchamp’s architectural history includes not only religious and château architecture, but also a communal washhouse. The three sites offer different perspectives on architectural forms and their respective periods, without requiring a shared sightseeing route.

Archaeology at Petit Maroc

The archaeological site of Petit Maroc in Sonchamp includes a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer camp. The features described include settlement areas, small huts with circular stone hearths, and workshops for making hunting weapons. The remains attest to several successive periods of habitation between 5000 and 3000 BC. The site’s history therefore reaches far beyond the construction phases of the later historic buildings.

Since the site was discovered in 1935, hundreds of thousands of flakes, tools and triangular arrowheads have been found there. These arrowheads are now called “Sonchamp points.” The finds give Petit Maroc a distinct archaeological focus: they attest both to its long history of habitation and to the making and use of tools and hunting weapons.

Fruit picking and regional produce

Apples can be picked at Ferme de Louareux from mid-August to the end of October; this period may change. During the harvest, guided orchard visits are available for groups and school classes, and produce is also sold on site. If you want to plan your visit around the harvest, check the dates in advance.

In the hamlet of La Chéraille in Sonchamp, Les Jardins de la Chéraille sells vegetables and fruit. This complements the seasonal apple harvest with another source of regional produce. Since availability may change, it is advisable to check which products are currently available before making a special trip to shop.

The Rémarde near Sonchamp

The source of the Rémarde is thought to be near La Réverderie in Sonchamp. However, because there are numerous springs, it is difficult to pinpoint its exact source. This is useful to bear in mind when learning about the river and the landscape around Sonchamp: there is no single, clearly defined source point.
