Discover Buc: Aqueduct, Château and Forest
Accommodation in Buc
Buc combines historic buildings with a woodland landscape of ponds and wetlands. This gives you different options for a hotel stay: architecture and local history, or nature and forest trails.
Buildings and historical periods
The Aqueduct of Buc is part of the Domaine national du château de Versailles. The arcades offer a tangible connection to the history of construction: they were built between 1684 and 1686. The visible section is 580 metres long, 21.5 metres high and comprises 19 arches. Its length, height and sequence of arches convey different dimensions of this structure.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste also takes you back to an earlier period. According to tradition, the parish associated with the church dates back to the beginning of the 13th century; the base of the bell tower may date from the same period. The parish history is therefore a matter of record, while the dating of the tower base remains tentative.
The timeline stretches from the documented parish history of the early 13th century, through the arcades of the late 17th century, to today’s Château du Haut-Buc, which dates from the 19th century. The château was built between 1864 and 1866. The buildings thus represent distinct historical periods, while the tentative dating of the bell tower is not treated as certain.
After being acquired by the state and then by the municipality of Buc, the Château du Haut-Buc was restored and opened to the public. In the Parc du Château du Haut Buc, notable historical and architectural features include a sphinx column, basins, the Temple de l’amour and the château itself. The park also has the Les Elfes children’s playground.
Forest, trails and community life
Buc’s public woodland areas are part of the Forêt domaniale de Versailles. The forest is rich in ponds and wetlands, which support a diverse biological community. A network of trails along waterways and ponds makes it accessible to the public. Temporary forestry work may affect access; check current access conditions before your visit.
Another cultural highlight is the Fête de la Fraternité in Buc. It brings together remembrance, conviviality and the celebration of peace, and gathers several generations. The 2026 edition described was the third.
Buc for your travel plans
The historic buildings offer tangible connections to different periods, while the forest provides a scenic perspective shaped by water, wetlands and trails. The Fête adds a community dimension to the cultural highlights. When choosing your destination, consider whether architecture, nature or a combination of the two should be the main focus of your stay.
