A stay in Versailles can revolve around the palace and park, the city’s history, or garden design and markets. The palace and park are considered a perfect model of a royal residence. The Hall of Mirrors is considered a masterpiece of the Louis XIV style. At the beginning of the 19th century, the palace and park were converted into a museum—bringing the history of the residence and the history of the museum together in one place.

Palace, Park and Garden Design

A walk through the gardens takes you to selected viewpoints, groves and pools, while explaining Le Nôtre’s design concept and symbolism. The Trianon Estate can be reached from the palace on foot through the gardens and park in about 30 minutes. As route details may change, check the latest official visitor information before planning your visit.

Performances can also shape your stay: the palace offers opera, concerts, theatre and ballet, including at the Opéra Royal and the Chapelle Royale. Programmes change, so check the dates for your travel period. Since 2003, the Académie équestre de Versailles has been based in the heart of the palace’s Grande Écurie. It combines the French equestrian tradition with contemporary design. Every weekend, it presents its signature production La Voie de l’écuyère; afterwards, the stables are open for free visits. Check the current performance calendar in advance as well.

Museums and City History

The Musée Lambinet focuses on the history of the city of Versailles, particularly the French Revolution. A different collection can be found at the Galerie des Sculptures et des Moulages, which features casts of ancient works. The Galerie des Carrosses displays ceremonial carriages, not vehicles for travel. The Salle du Jeu de Paume was converted into a museum of the French Revolution; this museum opened on 20 June 1883.

Theatre and religious architecture are also among the city’s cultural highlights. The Théâtre Montansier is one of France’s oldest Italian-style theatres. The Cathédrale Saint-Louis is a masterpiece of French Baroque architecture and has been classified as a historic monument since 1906. The Marché Saint-Louis is considered a unique urban feature in France.

Gardens, Markets and Seasonal Activities

The Potager du Roi is a nine-hectare garden protected as a historic monument. It was established between 1678 and 1683 at the request of Louis XIV and preserves a collection of more than 750 old and modern fruit and vegetable varieties. From April to October, guided tours, public gardening workshops and short courses are offered every weekend. Tours are conducted exclusively in French. As dates and offerings may change, check the current programme before your visit.

The Marché Notre-Dame comprises covered market halls that are open from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as the well-known open-air “Carrés”. Organic producers and food merchants set up at the Carrés every week. Check the current market days if you plan to visit. In this way, the markets offer a different city experience from the Potager du Roi, whose history, collection and seasonal programme put the garden at the centre.
