South Corsica: Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in South Corsica
South Corsica offers a variety of ways to shape a trip: coastal landscapes, striking rock formations, trails through the maquis, cultural sites and activities on the water. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these themes you want to define your stay. The coasts and attractions each give the trip its own focus.
Coastal landscapes from Bonifacio to Roccapina
The limestone plateau of Bonifacio overlooks the Strait of Bonifacio. The white cliffs of Bonifacio, the wild Testa Ventilegne, and the sandy beaches and lagoons of the east coast are also among the features of Corsica’s southern tip. Santa Giulia Bay is defined by white sand and clear blue sea. Along the coast from Roccapina to Santa Giulia, the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve lies next to the terrestrial part of the International Marine Park, which was established in 2012.
Roccapina brings together different kinds of landscape in a compact area: the bay includes a beach, dunes and small wetlands. A bright sandy cove with turquoise water lies below a lion-shaped granite ridge. From there, the maquis extends more than 500 hectares inland, with taffoni among its features. The beach and dunes thus sit alongside a rougher landscape shaped by rock and low-growing vegetation.
Walks and trails through the landscape
In Roccapina, an approximately 30-minute walk through the maquis leads to viewpoints and a large taffoni. The free Un caminu di a Punta trail starts at the car park on the RT40 and is designed as a 45-minute walk through the maquis and cultural heritage. The two walks therefore differ in both their stated duration and their destinations: the Roccapina walk focuses on viewpoints and a taffoni, while Un caminu di a Punta connects landscape and cultural heritage. Trail access and conditions may change; check the current situation before your visit.
Other trails also offer a choice of activity: the Sartenais-Valinco-Taravo area is a starting point for the long-distance hiking routes Mare a Mare Sud and Mare e Monti Sud. If you plan to take one of these routes, check the route and local conditions. These hiking trails are distinct from the shorter walks in Roccapina and call for a different kind of trip planning.
Cultural heritage between the coast and prehistory
The Campomoro Tower was built in 1583 and stands in a preserved coastal landscape dotted with numerous small coves. Casa di Roccapina is affiliated with the Prehistoric Museum of Sartène. Visits are available with an audio guide or led by staff; the outdoor area includes a reconstructed shepherd’s oriu. Check the visiting program and seasonal access before your trip.
In the Sartenais-Valinco-Taravo area, the dolmens and menhirs of Filitosa are among the prehistoric sites to visit. The Sartène Museum is also a cultural attraction there. These places offer different points of interest: Filitosa represents the stone remains of prehistory, while the museum provides a distinct stop to explore cultural heritage.
Activities on the water and in the mountains
The Lavezzi Archipelago lies off Bonifacio and can be reached by boat. Kayak tours and an underwater snorkeling trail offer other ways to explore the island group. Boat services and visitor rules may change; check the current conditions when making your plans. Activities in the Sartenais-Valinco-Taravo area also include sailing, canyoning, sea excursions and diving.
The Aiguilles de Bavella reach 1,899 meters. Features include canyons, natural slides, jumps and emerald-green granite pools. At Baracci Beach, swimming, relaxing and coastal walks are among the possible activities; the beach is in a protected natural landscape. Beach conditions may change and should be checked before your visit. Coast, water and mountain landscapes offer different reasons to consider when planning your trip.
Regional cuisine and local specialties
Foods associated with Sartenais-Valinco-Taravo include brocciu, local pastries, pulenta and seafood. Markets in Propriano and regional olive oil mills are also culinary experiences; check market days and access to individual mills in advance. Wine also plays a role: in South Corsica there are nearly 40 estates, or domaines, which together offer red, rosé and white wines. Their number may gradually change.
These culinary themes can be incorporated into your trip planning alongside the coast, culture or activities.
