Tiuccia brings together a beach at the mouth of the Liamone, archaeological traces, Genoese coastal fortifications and paths through the maquis. For travellers looking for a hotel, these themes provide a clear way to decide whether to focus primarily on coastal scenery, historic sites or walks. The following points of interest show how these options differ.

Coastal scenery along the Liamone

Liamone Beach begins just beyond Punta Capigliolo and stretches along both sides of the mouth of the Liamone River. The site is protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral. The river mouth is therefore an important landmark for the beach’s layout, while Punta Capigliolo marks its beginning. For those who associate Tiuccia primarily with the coast, this is a clearly defined highlight of the area.

Archaeological traces and Genoese fortifications

An archaeological rock shelter was discovered at Monte Lazzu. It served as a tomb and contained metal objects from the Early Iron Age. In Roman times, Tiuccia was an observation and defence post. These two historical connections differ both in period and significance: Monte Lazzu is a prehistoric archaeological site, while the Roman period marks Tiuccia’s role as a post.

A later chapter in the area’s fortification history is linked to the Tower of Capigliolu. Construction began in 1582. The tower was part of a series of Genoese coastal fortifications built by the Republic of Genoa between 1530 and 1620 to repel attacks by the Barbary corsairs. Today, it is a ruined Genoese tower on Punta Capigliolo, north of the Gulf of La Liscia. It stands at an elevation of 91 metres. The ruins of the Château de Capraja are another historical landmark: they lie on the heights above Tiuccia and are among the last estates of the Cinarchesi.

Walks and trails

An easy, shady walking trail passes beneath cork oaks on its way to Monte Lazzu and its prehistoric archaeological site. The mountain lies on the heights above Tiuccia and offers views over the Liamone plain and the Gulf of Sagone. This destination combines scenic viewpoints with the area’s archaeological heritage.

Another easy walk starts at the entrance to Tiuccia and heads north to the Fortin and the Genoese Tower of Capigliolu. Along the way, there are views of Liamone Beach and the Gulf of Liscia. The Casaglione-Tiuccia area also has paths, tracks and rural routes through the maquis, to viewpoints and down to the coast. These details offer different starting points for planning: a prehistoric archaeological site beneath cork oaks, a tower overlooking the beach and gulf, or rural routes through the maquis.

Getting there from Ajaccio

From Ajaccio, follow the D81 towards Sagone to Tiuccia/Casaglione. The drive takes about 30 minutes. The coastal road is easy and quick to drive and is accessible to all vehicles.
