Cuttoli-Corticchiato: Trails, Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Cuttoli-Corticchiato
In Cuttoli-Corticchiato, you can plan your trip around mountain trails, Corsican nature and historic cultural heritage. The destinations mentioned are quite distinct: at Monti d’Ignascu, chestnut trees and views take centre stage, while the trail to Punta di l’Alcudina leads to a 1,312-metre summit. There are also two trails linked to local history and the church of San Martinu.
Mountain trails and views
The trail to the summit of Monti d’Ignascu is in the municipality of Cuttoli-Corticchiato. It passes through chestnut trees and by endemic flowers before reaching a viewpoint overlooking the Gulf of Ajaccio. The summit also offers views of the Ajaccio basin, the Prunelli Valley and the Gravona Valley. Several chestnut trees in the municipality are remarkable for their exceptional size.
Another summit route leads to Punta di l’Alcudina. It starts in Pedi Muredda and passes via Punta San Petru before reaching the 1,312-metre summit. In good weather, the panorama also includes the Sanguinaires Islands.
Trails with different highlights
A Stretta di i furnacci gives you a specific duration and distance to help plan your visit: the circular trail is 1.2 kilometres long and takes around 45 minutes. You can start in Campianu or below Pedi Muredda. Historic features along the trail include six kilns for roof tiles and bricks, as well as a Genoese bridge. The bridge probably dates from the 17th century.
A Stretta di i Mulini stands out for the character of the trail: it consists entirely of unpaved paths and is suitable for mountain biking, horse riding and hiking. The Sentier du Patrimoine of the same name includes a former mule track in its first section. It led to watermills on the Funtanaccia stream.
Nature and cultural heritage throughout the year
Paeonia corsica, a botanical species endemic to Corsica, grows on a slope of Monte d’Ignascu. It can be seen there during its flowering period in May, though the timing may vary depending on conditions. For nature lovers, this seasonal aspect makes the month of the visit a useful point to consider when planning.
The church of San Martinu also offers a glimpse into history: it was rebuilt in the 19th century. Inside are a 14th-century marble holy-water stoup and a painting of the Virgin Mary. In Cuttoli-Corticchiato, nature observation and architectural and artistic history thus offer distinct interests.
Since 2012, the municipality has organised the event “I Scontri di a tupunimia” every year, the Days of Corsican Toponymy. If this topic influences your travel plans, check the current event dates before your visit. Along with the trails and historic sites, the event dates offer another indication of when you might want to visit Cuttoli-Corticchiato.
