Marignana: Churches, Stone Houses and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Marignana
Marignana offers plenty to interest travelers drawn to historic churches, Corsican village scenes and hiking trails. The Church of Saint-Jacques and the surrounding stone houses shape part of the village. In Chidazzu, the Church of Saint-François-Xavier tells the story of the hamlet; Revinda has further traces of the past. Marignana is also connected to two long-distance hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay focused on these cultural and landscape features, you can take them into account when choosing your destination.
Churches and Village Scenery
Marignana is surrounded by mountains with red rocks. Tall stone houses with sculpted portals and corbels stand around the church dedicated to Saint James. Numerous reused stones remain in the walls of neighboring houses; some feature an unusual bestiary. These details connect the church surroundings with the village’s architectural history and offer various features to look at more closely as you walk around.
The Church of Saint-Jacques was built at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th. Its painted decoration was created between 1870 and 1880 by Jean-Noël Coppolani, a painter from Marignana. In the third quarter of the 20th century, Raymond Rifflard reworked the paintings. The site thus brings together the church’s early building history and a distinctly later artistic treatment.
Another way to explore the area’s history is to visit Chidazzu. The hamlet was founded at the beginning of the 16th century by shepherds from Niolo. Between 1670 and 1686, the Church of Saint-François-Xavier was built there to replace the older Church of Saint-Nicolas, which was far from the homes and in a state of disrepair. The building has a single-nave barrel-vaulted hall, a semicircular choir with a domical vault, and a bell tower crowned by a dome. A domical vault is a dome-like vault; together with the barrel vault, it gives the church its contrasting spatial forms. The wooden and bronze bell tower is another distinctive feature.
History in Revinda and the Surrounding Area
Revinda also offers a historical landmark: the Church of Saint-Siméon was built in 1800 and consecrated in 1801 by Monseigneur Francesco Guasco, the last Bishop of Sagone. Copper mining is another chapter in the area’s history. Mining installations can still be seen in part in the former mining area of Prunelli, near Revinda, Gradi and Livida Mala. Marignana also played an important role in the Resistance during the Second World War. These various traces span religious architecture, mining and wartime history.
Hiking Trails and Stages
For hikers, two route descriptions are important; their similar names can easily lead to confusion. At Marignana, the Mare a Mare Nord reaches the final section of the Mare è Monti. For the Mare è Monti Nord, a 15.6-kilometer stage from Marignana to E Case is described. The stage description gives the distance and endpoints, but no walking time. Check current trail conditions before setting out. If you want to include different routes in your travel plans, it helps to first distinguish each route from its corresponding stage.
The mountains with their red rocks are another feature of the landscape. Together with the churches, houses and historical traces, they offer a range of interests to include in your stay. You can focus on architectural history, explore the history of the hamlets and their churches, or consider the hiking stages described here. The specific stage descriptions differ: one describes the course of the Mare a Mare Nord in relation to the Mare è Monti, while the other is a 15.6-kilometer section of the Mare è Monti Nord starting in Marignana.
Festivals in Marignana
The votive festival in honor of Saint James is traditionally celebrated every year and includes a mass in the Church of Saint-Jacques. Marignana’s patron saint festival takes place on the last Sunday in July. Check the dates and local program for the relevant year before your trip.
