Appietto: Heritage, Golfe de Lava and Rocher des Gozzi
Accommodation in Appietto
Appietto brings together striking landscapes and traces of different eras. The Rocher des Gozzi and the Golfe de Lava each create a distinctive landscape; churches, a ruin, a dolmen and the traditional Four de Volpaja add places of historical significance. Hiking and nautical leisure activities are also among the things you can consider when planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Appietto, thinking about whether you are especially interested in landscapes, cultural history or outdoor activities can help you decide what kind of trip you want.
Landscapes at the Rocher des Gozzi and the Golfe de Lava
The Rocher des Gozzi reaches a height of 705 metres and towers over the Pays Ajaccien. The Golfe de Lava offers a different landscape feature: 150 hectares of it lie within the municipality of Appietto. This area includes a low sandy terrace and the lower reaches of the Lava stream. The two therefore present clearly distinct scales side by side—the height of the Rocher and the extent of the gulf within the municipality.
The Dune du Golfe de Lava site lies at Tamaricciu in the Golfe de Lava. It comprises a secondary coastal dune and a mastic shrubland behind the beach. The site is designated under the Habitats Directive. Alongside its sandy shore, these specific landscape features give the coastal area a distinctive character of its own.
Churches and historical landmarks
Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1532 as Appietto’s new church. Later renovations added a bell tower about 30 metres high. Inside are trompe-l’œil and grisaille wall paintings by Ivan Choupik. The building thus combines a precise historical date with later alterations and a specifically identified interior decoration.
The Chapel of San Chirgu is thought to have been built in the late 14th century. It served as Appietto’s parish church until Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1532. The chapel stands on the Saint-Cyr plateau, overlooking the Gulf of Ajaccio and the Lava valley. Its history should therefore be understood in terms of both its former role as a parish church and its position overlooking two distinct landscapes.
The Chapel of San Sistru also represents an earlier period in the area’s history. Dating from the 14th century, it was Appietto’s main church before it was abandoned and is now a ruin. The historic hamlet of Volpaja is also home to the traditional Four de Volpaja, considered a testament to the municipality’s medieval history.
An even older landmark is Ciutulaghja, a megalithic burial complex dating from the late 4th millennium BC. The dolmen consists of three upright supporting stones. Only scattered fragments of the capstone remain. Appietto’s historical sites thus span the period from this prehistoric structure to the churches and chapels of the Middle Ages and later centuries.
Patron saint’s festival, beach and hiking
Appietto celebrates the feast of San Chirgu, also known as San Quilicu, every year. The celebrations include a mass at the Chapel of Saint Cyr followed by a local procession. Specific activities and dates can vary from year to year, so if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check that year’s programme.
There is a base for nautical leisure activities at Lava beach. Options mentioned include jet skiing, boat trips and pedal boating. Operators and availability may vary. If one of these activities is important to your plans, check what is currently on offer in advance.
Two hikes are described as starting at the same point: the hike to Monte Gozzi begins at the car park by the Chapel of San Chirgu. The circular hike to the Rocher des Gozzi and Punta Pastinaca also starts there, at the car park opposite Appietto. The destinations distinguish the two hikes; the circular route reaches the summit of Punta Pastinaca, where a 360-degree view is described. As trail conditions can change regardless of the route description, check them before setting out.
The landscapes, historic sites and activities described here offer different ways to shape your trip. When looking for hotels in Appietto, you can first decide which of these themes matters to you, then check the specific details of the hotels available.
