The places and activities differ in their focus: some take you into the vineyard landscape, while others are devoted to natural areas or the history of the Battle of Alésia.
Vineyards and trails
The UNESCO Climats comprise 1,247 vineyard plots, precisely delineated according to geological, hydrological and atmospheric characteristics. Their number and precise boundaries make the layout of this vineyard landscape a subject in its own right: the focus is on many individually defined plots, not just a general overview of winegrowing.
For hikers, the named routes offer different ways to explore. The GR des Grands Crus de Bourgogne runs for 87 kilometres through the vineyards between southern Dijon and Santenay. A guidebook to the Chemin de la Belle étoile, by contrast, describes ten days of hiking on a GR de Pays route in the wider Haute-Marne–Côte-d’Or area. Thus, one description focuses on a specific route length, while the other highlights the duration of the hiking experience.
Unlike the hiking options mentioned above, the Route du Cassis de Bourgogne has a culinary and cultural focus. The 55-kilometre route connects Nuits-Saint-Georges with Dijon.
Natural areas and activities
The villages and forests of the Parc national de forêts are open to visitors free of charge all year round. In the wider Haute-Marne–Côte-d’Or area, national park staff offer guided nature discovery activities in summer, focusing on fauna and flora. As this programme is seasonal, it’s a good idea to check the dates before your trip. At the Marais des Brosses, renovated paths and boardwalks improve safe public access while also helping to protect the marsh. The Réserve naturelle nationale de la Combe Lavaux is a 487-hectare protected area with distinctive landscapes. A management plan allows low-impact activities there while taking the protection of native species into account. Before visiting, check the local regulations and which activities are available.
Other natural areas are defined by their respective designations and management: the Forêt du Val Suzon has held the Forêt d’exception label since 2016. The Côte-d’Or département also has 13 designated Espaces naturels sensibles, managed by the département. Roman history at Alésia
The MuséoParc Alésia presents the battle between Caesar and Vercingetorix from both Roman and Gallic perspectives. An augmented-reality experience brings the fortifications to life and places visitors on the Roman side of the battle.
