Talant can be explored through two themes: its position on a rocky spur with sweeping views, and its historic centre with medieval buildings. This combination gives your trip planning a clear direction. You can focus your stay on views, walks and natural areas, or turn your attention more towards churches, the town gate and historic architecture.

Views and landscape in Talant

Talant stands on a rocky spur that rises to 353 metres. From there, panoramic views open up over Lac Kir and its surroundings. The Esplanade Cour-du-Roy lies on the former castle grounds and offers views over Dijon and the surrounding landscapes. The two viewpoints differ in what they look out over: the rocky spur foregrounds Lac Kir and its surroundings, while the Esplanade looks towards the city and the landscapes around it.

The Parc de la Fontaine aux Fées combines a legal framework for nature conservation with traces of earlier land use. Since 1994, the park has been subject to legal nature conservation rules, based on an agreement between the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels de Bourgogne and the town of Talant. The landscape includes visible quarries, as well as areas that were formerly used as vineyards, orchards and pastureland. Those interested in how a landscape has evolved will find both a focus on conservation and evidence of earlier forms of land use here.

Church, town gate and castle remains

Construction of the basilica church of Notre-Dame de Talant began in 1208 under Eudes III. It is considered the first Gothic church in the Duchy of Burgundy and was listed as a historic monument in 1908. The 13th-century Gothic church houses numerous statues and magnificent stained-glass windows designed by Gérard Garouste. This brings together a long history of construction and striking artistic features in a single building.

La Porte Dijonnaise is a 13th-century gate with a drawbridge. It was protected by two round towers with loopholes and battlements. From the Promenade Eudes III, you can appreciate the gate’s strategic position; the promenade offers a distinct way to understand this historic site. Le Cellier du château points to another part of the town’s history: it is the last surviving remnant of the ducal castle. Traces of eight wine cellars can be found on its walls.

The Jardin des 5 Roses also reflects the town’s architectural history. It was created in 2007 on the remains of the former garden of the Maison du Chapitre. The rose varieties used are associated with the century of the neighbouring architecture. Its historic connection comes both from the site of the former garden and from the choice of plants.

Walks and historic architecture

La Liaison Verte is a 1.4-kilometre walking route through Talant. It was created through a series of linked initiatives to enhance the heritage and natural areas. The specific length gives you an idea of how to plan your walk; at the same time, the route’s purpose brings together two themes that define Talant: historic sites and landscape.

Historic houses have been preserved in the old town centre. Information panels point out notable features of the historic architecture, giving you something specific to look out for on your walks. Talant lies at the gateways to Dijon, and its historic centre is ideal for walking. Depending on your interests, you can get to know the town through its viewpoints, its buildings, or the connection between landscape and history.
