Volnay can be explored through three distinct themes: the red Burgundy wine of the AOP Volnay, buildings with a long history, and the Voie des Vignes. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can offer useful guidance when planning your trip. Wine, architecture, hiking and cycling provide different ways to engage with the town.

Wine and Climats in Volnay

The AOP Volnay is an exclusively red Burgundy wine from the Côte de Beaune wine region. Its geographical area covers the municipality of Volnay and also a small part of the municipality of Meursault. The wine designation is therefore interesting in geographical terms, too: its area is not limited to Volnay alone. Among the AOP’s Climats, 29 are classified as Premier Cru. This makes it possible to distinguish the geographical boundaries of the appellation from the classification of individual Climats as two different aspects of the wine theme.

One connection to the village’s wine culture is the family winery Domaine Buffet François, whose history dates back to 1692. Wine tastings are offered there in a traditional, two-level vaulted cellar. The cellar provides a tangible setting for the tasting in the village. As arrangements may change, check in advance for current options. The tasting cellar at Domaine Henri Delagrange also offers a unique view of Volnay’s finest appellations. It is also advisable to enquire in advance about current tasting options.

Architectural History and Details

The Église paroissiale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte was built in the 13th century and has been protected as a historic monument since November 3, 1925. The tympanum above the portal bears a carved-out mystical lamb. The capitals feature motifs of grapevines and oak trees. The church thus offers several specific details to look out for alongside its period of construction: the portal, the image on the tympanum, and the different plant motifs on the capitals.

Another point of reference in time is the Dolmen dit La Pierre-Brûlée, a Neolithic dolmen. It has been protected as a historic monument since July 13, 1911. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié is also a recommended destination in Volnay. It has two ribbed vaults resting on moulded corbels bearing a coat of arms. Corbels are projecting supports from which the vaults spring; their moulding and heraldic decoration add another architectural detail to the description of the two vaults. The dolmen and the chapel are also recommended destinations in Volnay. Check local access conditions for both sites before your visit.

Hiking and Cycling on the Voie des Vignes

The Voie des Vignes passes through Volnay on its section between Beaune and Santenay. It is accessible to hikers and cyclists and runs between vineyards along the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne. Alongside the wine themes and historic buildings, this makes the route a focal point for people who want to travel on foot or by bicycle. Check route conditions before your trip.

Along the Voie des Vignes, the villages it passes through have cycling equipment, picnic tables and illustrated information boards. This information refers to the villages along the route and provides practical guidance on the facilities mentioned there. When planning your time in Volnay, you can choose between a stay focused on wine and architecture and a trip that also includes a section of the Voie des Vignes.
