Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne: Heritage and Gardens
Accommodation in Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne
Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne is a destination for anyone looking to combine cultural history with nature. The Château d’Etrabonne, the parish church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude, the Jardin des Abeilles, and various activities each offer a different focus. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in architecture and art, gardens, or outdoor trails and activities.
Château d’Etrabonne: heritage status and building history
The Château d’Etrabonne combines heritage status with distinctive architectural and landscape features. The entire site was listed as a Monument historique by decree on December 27, 2019. The château has four corner towers and was remodeled in the 19th century; the site also includes an extensive park bordering the Vingeanne. The dates refer to different events: 2019 marks the listing of the entire site, while the 19th century dates the remodeling of the building. This distinguishes its protected status, building history, and connection to the landscape along the Vingeanne.
Art in the parish church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude
The parish church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude offers another point of interest for culture enthusiasts. Its monumental murals are titled “Vierge des litanies et anges musiciens.” They were discovered in 1991 during work in the church and immediately restored. The same church houses the sculptural group “Le Calvaire,” classified as a protected monument object since July 22, 1959. There is also a statue of a young lord holding a falcon on his hand. It probably dates from the 15th century; its iconography suggests that it may depict Saint Thibault or Saint Julien. The artworks bring together different historical aspects: the murals have dated discovery and restoration, “Le Calvaire” has a dated protected status, and the identification of the falcon statue remains uncertain.
Gardens, trails, and landscape
The Jardin des Abeilles offers a different focus. This 2,500 m² French-style garden combines boxwood, roses, a pond, an orchard, and an apiary. These features extend beyond planting, giving the garden its own character alongside the historic buildings. A marked 9 km walking trail starts from the esplanade of the former Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne railway station. The Circuit de Jacky focuses on exploring the landscape via small paths and encounters with nature. The two options offer different experiences: the marked walking trail is 9 km long, while the Circuit de Jacky focuses on exploring the landscape and experiencing nature.
More activities

The Pat&Plumes educational farm offers equine-assisted mediation workshops, as well as opportunities to meet horses and donkeys. The workshops and animal encounters are different formats; the encounters involve horses and donkeys.
