Lanthes: Discover the Church and Walking Trail
Accommodation in Lanthes
Lanthes offers two distinct themes to help you plan your trip: the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Parish Church, with its history of construction and furnishings, and the Sentier de la Bauche as a walking route. This lets you focus your stay more on cultural history or outdoor activity. The church’s dated changes and the trail’s information on length, duration, and landscape help you decide. The two highlights answer different questions: the church is about building phases and individual objects, while the route is about distance and landscape.
Parish Church: Building Phases and Furnishings
The Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Parish Church was probably built in the 13th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 16th century; in the 18th century, the choir was rebuilt and the sacristy added. This sequence combines a probable early origin with an extensive rebuilding and later additions. The front facade and the lower part of the nave walls are made of limestone. The nave is the church’s elongated main section; this helps locate the material description in relation to the architectural elements mentioned.
One particularly illustrative object is the pulpit, Chaire à prêcher. It is located in the nave against the right-hand wall and has been classified as a protected object since April 3, 1907. Its dating covers several phases: parts date from the first quarter of the 16th century, with later work from the third quarter of the 19th century. Thus, two widely separated periods in the pulpit’s history are reflected in its furnishings. Together with the church’s construction chronology, this offers an additional temporal perspective on the interior.
The nave also contains the fully sculpted representation Ronde-bosse: instruments de la Passion on the confessional. “Fully sculpted” describes a three-dimensional representation, not merely a flat image; its location on the confessional places the work on a specific object in the church interior. The bell also provides a historical reference: its inscription states that it was cast in 1852 and names Jean Bte Petitjean as mayor of Lanthes. The bell is rung by hand using a mechanism with a rope and a half-lever.
Hiking the Sentier de la Bauche
For outdoor activity, the Sentier de la Bauche is a specific option. The Saône-Tourisme guide for 2026–2027 gives a length of 11 kilometers and a duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. The route passes through Pagny-le-Château, Lanthes, Seurre, and Chamblanc; it therefore crosses several communes and should not be understood as a trail confined to Lanthes. The landscape first takes you through extensive woodland and then through agricultural areas. The trail is heavily shaded. Route details may change; check them again before setting out.
