Discover Seurre through its varied cultural and landscape themes: from the Gothic Church of Saint-Martin and historic hospital rooms to museums about the Saône and paths along the river. If you are looking for a hotel in Seurre, the town’s attractions can help you decide whether this is the right destination for you. Are you most interested in architectural history, the development of river transport or a route through the countryside? The places and activities mentioned offer different experiences, so you can choose the focus that suits your stay.

Church of Saint-Martin and Hôtel-Dieu

The present-day Gothic Church of Saint-Martin dates from the late 13th or early 14th century. A rose window is a round window; the one in Saint-Martin is made of colored glass and measures six meters across. The church’s carillon now consists of 47 bells. Its architecture and carillon offer different points of interest within the same historic building.

The Hôtel-Dieu offers a different perspective on the town’s history. A visit to its several listed historic rooms, furnished in period style, offers insight into hospital life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The pharmacy features wood paneling and around 100 faience vessels that were used to prepare remedies. The focus is therefore on both the history of the hospital and the furnishings and use of its pharmacy.

The Jacquemart trail introduces notable buildings and places in Seurre with twelve information panels and is accessible year-round. Its focus differs from a visit to the historic rooms in the Hôtel-Dieu: here, you can explore a range of buildings and places, while the Hôtel-Dieu offers insight into life in a hospital in the past.

Museums exploring archaeology and rural heritage

The Musée de la Saône et des Gens de la Saône presents the archaeology of the Val de Saône from prehistory to the Middle Ages. It also documents the history of inland navigation on the Saône and the daily lives of the families who lived on board. The museum brings together a broad archaeological timeline and the history of life on the river.

The Musée de plein air de l’Étang Rouge has a different focus: it comprises around 15 reconstructed homes and farm buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Its orchard and heritage vineyards preserve more than 150 old fruit varieties. Reconstructed rural buildings and the preservation of old varieties are two distinct but related themes here. Visitors aged 12 and over can take part in an outdoor geocaching investigation game. If you plan to take part, check the activity details before your visit.

Paths along the Saône and through the countryside

The Sentier de l’écluse runs along the Saône and offers opportunities to watch herons. It is accessible year-round, except during periods when the Saône is in flood. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your route. The Sentier Anne-Marie Javouhey passes through villages, fields and some woodland. The two routes therefore offer different experiences: riverside scenery and possible heron sightings on the Sentier de l’écluse, and villages, fields and some woodland on the Sentier Anne-Marie Javouhey.

Travel with your bicycle

You can also take your bicycle with you when travelling to the area. In the Rives de Saône area, TER trains carry bicycles free of charge and without a reservation, subject to available space; Seurre is one of the stations served. Check the bicycle conditions before you travel, as the policy may change.
