Saint-Aubin – Winegrowing, Architectural History and Landscape
Accommodation in Saint-Aubin
Saint-Aubin brings together winegrowing, architectural history, and a landscape shaped by vineyards. The vines climb the slopes, while the combes open onto expansive views. The village is also on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne. This gives you different themes to focus on when planning your trip: wine culture, historic architecture, or routes on foot and by bike through vineyards, forests, and rocks.
Winegrowing, Appellation, and Caveau
The Saint-Aubin-Village appellation includes 30 Premier Cru vineyards. Le Caveau de Saint-Aubin offers the opportunity to learn about the village’s soils and terroirs. Tastings of wines from the wineries represented there are also available. The Caveau is also a place to be introduced to the world of wine and exchange ideas. For trip planning, there is a distinction: the appellation classifies winegrowing through its Premier Crus; at the Caveau, you can explore the soils and terroirs and taste wines.
Cabottes are also part of Burgundy’s winegrowing heritage, which visitors can discover in Saint-Aubin. This means that wine culture extends beyond the appellation and wine tastings: the cabottes form a distinct part of this heritage.
Parish Church and Fortified Manor House
Several periods of construction come together at Saint-Aubin’s parish church. The eastern group of buildings was probably built at the end of the 10th century; the bell tower and spire date from the 12th century. The dating of the eastern group of buildings remains uncertain. The different dates show how far back the church’s architectural history goes, without assigning all its parts to the same period.
The fortified manor house in Gamay has the characteristics of a Burgundian fortified noble residence. The keep and possibly the residential wing were built in the 13th century. The residential wing appears to have been remodelled in the 15th century, when a lower wing was added. At the end of the 19th century, the de Chauvigny de Blot family restored the manor house.
The two architectural histories have different points of emphasis: at the parish church, these are the uncertain dating of the eastern group of buildings and the construction of the bell tower and spire. At the manor house, the medieval building phases, a later alteration to the residential wing, and the restoration can be distinguished.
Vineyard Landscape and Routes
The landscape offers different perspectives: vines on the slopes define the scenery, while the combes open onto expansive views. For outdoor activities, there are walking and cycling routes through vineyards, forests, and rocks. A stay can therefore include both views of the winegrowing landscape and activities on routes through several types of terrain.
The “Collines de Maison Forte” circular route passes vineyards in the Saint-Aubin Premier Cru appellation. If you plan to take this route, check current trail conditions locally. This lets you consider this circular route separately in your plans, rather than treating it as interchangeable with all hiking and cycling routes.
Find a Hotel for Your Stay
If you’re looking for a hotel in Saint-Aubin, first consider which focus you want for your stay: winegrowing and tastings, architectural history, or hiking and cycling. For wine enthusiasts, the appellation and the Caveau offer different points of interest. Those interested in architectural history or planning routes through the landscape will have different priorities.
