Teruel: Mudéjar Heritage, Dinosaurs and History
Accommodation in Teruel
Teruel combines striking Mudéjar architecture with the story of the Lovers and a special focus on dinosaurs. Attractions in the wider region and routes through the landscapes of the Comarca Comunidad de Teruel add to the choice. When looking for a hotel in Teruel, consider whether culture, a festival, Dinópolis or activities in the region will be the focus of your trip.
Mudéjar Architecture and the City’s History
Teruel’s UNESCO World Heritage Mudéjar sites include the tower, roof and cimborio of the Cathedral of Santa María de Mediavilla, the tower and church of San Pedro, and the church towers of San Martín and Salvador. The Mudéjar art of Aragon bears witness to the peaceful coexistence of Christianity and Islam in the Middle Ages, under the influence of Jewish culture. This connects the study of individual buildings with a broader cultural and historical theme.
The roof of Santa María Cathedral features scenes of traditional carpentry crafts, religious life, different social groups and the medieval bestiary. Anyone interested in the roof’s imagery will find a variety of subjects side by side: crafts, everyday life, religion, and depictions of animals and mythical creatures. The Torre de la Bombardera is considered Teruel’s first artillery tower. The Acueducto de los Arcos was built to improve the city’s water supply. These two structures offer further perspectives on the city’s history, from defense to public services.
Dinópolis and the World of Fossils
Dinópolis, a theme park devoted to the world of dinosaurs, is located close to the city of Teruel. It includes the Museo Paleontológico de Teruel, with original fossils and replicas covering aquatic environments, Mesozoic vertebrates and Tertiary mammals. Its themes therefore extend beyond dinosaurs to encompass different habitats and geological eras.
Dinópolis also includes Territorio Dinópolis, Cine 3D, a T-Rex attraction, children’s play areas and dining areas. When planning your trip, you can think of this visit as distinct in theme from Teruel’s historic sights: the focus here is on prehistoric creatures, fossils and attractions. Which areas interest you will depend on whether you want to plan around exhibitions, film, attractions, or play and dining areas.
Festivals and Other Impressions of Teruel
Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura is recognized as a festival of International Tourist Interest; the Spanish ministry reported on this in December 2025. The reenactment tells the tragic story of the Lovers of Teruel in a historical-legendary form. Since the official calendar was established in 2009, the event has been scheduled for the weekend corresponding to the third Friday in February. Check the specific event dates when planning your trip.
The original figure of the Torico is also part of the city’s history: the Museo de Teruel added it to its permanent exhibition. At its presentation on May 14, 2026, the figure was on display on the building’s fourth floor. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance whether it is still on display there.
The Wider Region
Some cultural destinations lie outside the city of Teruel and offer their own reasons to explore the region. Mora de Rubielos has a medieval street plan, with sections of its city walls and former entrance gates still standing. The Castillo de Mora de Rubielos was built by the Fernández de Heredia between the 14th and 15th centuries and is one of the best-preserved castles in Aragon.
Rubielos de Mora is home to Territorio Dinópolis’s Subsede Región Ambarina. Visitors can see how insects became trapped in tree resin. The Museo Salvador Victoria is housed in the former Hospital de Gracia. These regional destinations have different focuses: the castle and street plan showcase historic architecture, while the Región Ambarina offers a paleontological perspective on insects trapped in resin.
Galáctica, a center for astronomy education with an interactive museum and telescope observations, is located in Arcos de las Salinas. Guided visits to the Observatorio Astrofísico Javalambre are also offered as a visitor activity there. Galáctica is part of the wider region around Teruel and offers a different theme from Mudéjar art or the city’s history.
Hiking, Cycling and Getting There
Across the Comarca Comunidad de Teruel, the Andatela hiking trails pass through landscapes where mountains and open spaces alternate with rivers, gorges and wetlands. The network includes short routes for all age groups, local trails and long-distance trails with varying levels of difficulty. Bicitela is an extensive network of marked cycling routes through villages, fields and natural areas; it also includes challenging cycling routes for different levels of physical fitness and endurance. The hiking and cycling information applies to the Comarca: you can therefore choose between hiking trails and cycling routes, as well as between different route types and levels of difficulty. Check the conditions of individual routes before making plans.
Teruel does not have a conventional commercial airport with scheduled passenger flights. Nearby alternatives include the airports of Valencia, Zaragoza and Castellón. Check available flights and airline options before planning your trip.
