Alcaine: River Landscapes, Rock Art and Architectural History
Accommodation in Alcaine
Alcaine lies on the left bank of the Río Martín and the right bank of the Río Radón. Below the village, the two rivers meet and flow into the Cueva Foradada Reservoir. Alcaine is part of the Parque Cultural del Río Martín, which brings together the natural landscape of the Martín gorges and valuable rock paintings in rock overhangs. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of themes, including local history, architecture, river landscapes and routes through the cultural landscape.
Routes and landscapes around Alcaine
The Route de las Torres runs along the ridges and cliffs southwest and north of Alcaine. Five towers still stand along the route; some have been converted into dovecotes. The towers also tell the story of how the buildings were used at a later date. If you want to choose routes based on their particular focus, the stages of the GR-262 offer different highlights.
Stage 05 runs from Obón to Alcaine. Below Las Cinglas, it branches off to the rock paintings at la Cañada de Marco, then continues to Alcaine via the Cuesta de San Ramón. Stage 06 begins in Alcaine and follows the river downstream, passing the end of the Cueva Foradada Reservoir on the way to the former dyeing basins. These basins are remnants of a textile industry that has since ceased. Stage 05 thus combines rock art with the route into the village, while Stage 06 leads to traces of the former work carried out at the basins.
Castle, church and protected buildings
Castillo de Alcaine stood on a ridge and had a rectangular ground plan, with at least three defensive towers along its perimeter. Only a few remains survive. The castle was built in 1263 after the Christian conquest of this area and served to monitor the route between Híjar and Montalbán that ran along the Río Martín. Today, the Castillo is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.
The Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its bell tower is designed in the Mudéjar tradition. In the main chapel, an elliptical dome and a lantern decorated in the 18th century define the space. Another notable part of the protected heritage is the Nevera de Alcaine: the protection order published on August 10, 2021, lists it as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It is one of the traditional ice houses and ice pits protected in Aragón under this category.
Discover rock art and nature
The rock art sites of La Higuera and la Cañada de Marco are located within the municipality of Alcaine. Both sites preserve prehistoric paintings dating back several thousand years, depicting hunting scenes as well as human and animal figures. The rock art reflects the character of the Parque Cultural del Río Martín, whose landscape combines gorges and rock overhangs with paintings.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Fauna del Parque Cultural del Río Martín is located in an old Renaissance manor house on Plaza Tenor Albero. Reproductions, graphics and information panels provide insights into the park’s ecosystems and the species that live there. Admission is free; there is no set opening schedule, and contacting the center in advance is recommended. Check current visiting arrangements before you go.
Waterfall and reservoir trip
The Cascada del Cubo is a waterfall on the Río Radón. A path through pine forests and rock formations leads to the Cascada del Cubo. As of July 4, 2025, access was free and open year-round; there were no tourist facilities on site. Check current conditions before setting out.
In July 2025, canoe trips on the Cueva Foradada Reservoir near the center of Alcaine were offered by Natualcaine. If you plan to take part, check in advance whether the activity is currently available and whether a reservation is required. Along with the routes, buildings and rock paintings, these offer a range of themes to help you plan your trip to Alcaine.
