When choosing a hotel in Saldón, it is worth considering the landscape and the kind of routes you would like to take. Local highlights include the Sabinar, the Mirador de El Cabezo viewpoint and several routes of varying lengths and layouts. The town’s traditional architecture is another distinct focus. You can tailor your stay to hiking routes, landscapes or Saldón’s architectural styles.

Hiking routes by length and layout

The Route de Los Poblados is a circular route about 6.2 kilometres long, with around 89 metres of elevation gain. It is suitable for hiking or cycling with family and children. The entire route follows easily walkable paths and is marked throughout with signs and waymarkers. Its destination is two Iberian settlements in the Sabinar de Saldón. The route’s length, circular layout and destination give it a clear profile for travel planning.

The Cueva de la Artesa Route is also circular, but at 11.5 kilometres, with 140 metres of positive elevation gain, it is longer and has a greater stated elevation gain than the Route de Los Poblados. It leads to a small grotto. You can view it from the outside, but you cannot enter: it lies several metres above the path. If you choose this route, the distinction between viewing the grotto from outside and walking through it is something to bear in mind when planning.

The Camino Viejo de Saldón a Bezas offers a linear alternative. The approximately 10.5-kilometre route mostly follows the former connecting path between the two towns. It passes through the Sabinar de Saldón and the protected Pinares de Rodeno area. Signs and information boards indicate the route along the way. The three routes therefore differ not only in their stated lengths and elevation gains, but also in their layout: two circular routes and one linear route.

Sabinar, viewpoints and protected landscapes

The Mirador de El Cabezo viewpoint lies above Saldón. It offers panoramic views of the Sabinar surroundings and the protected area of El Rodeno. The Camino Viejo also passes through protected landscapes, here through the Pinares de Rodeno. The Sabinar de Saldón is part of the Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance Sabinares de Saldón y Valdecuenca (code ES2420136).

Mammals in the Sabinar include red deer, roe deer and wild boar. Another special feature is the Sabina Peseto, listed as a unique tree. It reaches a height of 12.5 metres, and its crown has a diameter of 14 metres. In the Sabinar, the evergreen juniper species Juniperus thurifera occurs in both tree and shrub form. The stands are very well preserved both in the areas dominated by this species and where it grows alongside Scots pines, black pines, holm oaks and downy oaks.

The landscape also includes La Vega, in the lower-lying area around Saldón. There are cereal fields there, with water flowing towards Valdecuenca. Local descriptions therefore encompass different landscapes: the Sabinar with its trees and wildlife, protected areas, and the lower-lying fields of the Vega.

Architecture and local traditions

Saldón’s traditional architecture is characterized by whitewashed masonry and round-arched portals made of ashlar stone. The Calle Baja has a particularly large number of such examples. Visitors interested in townscapes and architectural styles will find, alongside the nature and route-related highlights, an independent reason to include the town itself in their travel plans.

A pilgrimage to a hermitage is part of local tradition. It takes place on 24 August, the feast day of Saint Bartholomew, during the patron saint festivities. The date connects a visit with a specific religious and cultural aspect of Saldón.
