Utrillas: Mining History and Trails
Accommodation in Utrillas
Utrillas offers several ways to explore during your stay: the history of mining, museums and trails along former railway lines. If you’re looking for a hotel in Utrillas, this breakdown can help with your planning. First, consider whether your visit will focus mainly on the Parque Minero, museums and historic landmarks, or routes. This will help you choose the sights that fit your itinerary.
Mining Experience at Pozo Santa Bárbara
The Tren Minero offers a 2.5-kilometre ride between Pozo Santa Bárbara and the Museo de la Ciencia. At the Pozo, a visitor route, developed as a mining museum, passes through various features of the former mining operation. The Museo de los Utensilios Mineros is also located at Pozo Santa Bárbara, in the Parque Minero. The complex also includes a landscaped recreational area with green spaces and an area with picnic tables.
The park’s mining experience is offered aboard the original Hulla Nº1 steam locomotive, dating from 1903. Depending on the departure time, the Tren Minero ride may start at Pozo Santa Bárbara or the Museo de la Ciencia. If the ride is an essential part of your plans, check the relevant departure time in advance.
Museums and Historic Landmarks
The Museo de la Ciencia y la Arqueología Minera de Utrillas is located in the town centre. The Museo de los Utensilios Mineros, by contrast, is at Pozo Santa Bárbara in the Parque Minero. The two names can help you distinguish between the museums when planning your itinerary.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Natividad is also a historic landmark: it is a parish church from the 17th century, built to the design of a late 17th-century Baroque temple. The Monumento al Minero stands in the same square as Utrillas Town Hall. The town’s palaeontological history includes the distinction of Utrillas in Teruel, together with Morella in Castellón, as the first place in Spain where dinosaur bones were described.
Vía Verde and Other Trails
The Camino Natural Vía Verde Ruta del Carbón follows the route of the disused Utrillas–Zaragoza railway line. The section between Utrillas and Ventas de Muniesa has gentle gradients and wide paths. The rest area at Estación Utrillas-Montalbán has three picnic tables and two bike racks. As maintenance, access and facilities may change, check the current conditions before setting out.
The BTT TE/06 Ruta 4 reaches Utrillas along the former Lavaderos mining railway and leads to a viewpoint on the upper part of the Sierra de San Just. There are also various signposted and prepared trails around Utrillas, including PRTE 41, PRTE 45 and the former railway line used to transport coal to the washing plants. When choosing a route, compare the features identified for each one: the Vía Verde section has gentle gradients and wide paths, while the Ruta 4 leads to a viewpoint.
