Cuevas De Cañart: Local History and Excursions
Accommodation in Cuevas De Cañart
Las Cuevas de Cañart combines a medieval town layout with buildings from different periods and opportunities for excursions. This gives you two areas to focus on when planning your trip: the town’s historic architecture and outdoor activities. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay more on architecture and history or on walks and excursions.
Medieval Town Centre and Architectural History
The historic urban layout of the Conjunto Histórico de Cuevas de Cañart dates back to medieval times. In 2004, the Conjunto Histórico was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. One specific landmark is the Portal de Marzo: it is the only surviving evidence of the medieval wall of Las Cuevas de Cañart.
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is a Baroque building. Remains of the Convento de Concepcionistas Franciscanas have survived; the Baroque convent was destroyed in the 19th century during the Carlist Wars. The Baroque church and the remains of a destroyed convent thus represent different architectural histories.
The Ermita de la Virgen de los Pueyos was remodelled in the 17th century. It was given a centralised floor plan and a dome decorated with sgraffito. The new monastery of the Servite Fathers near Las Cuevas de Cañart was founded on 10 May 1727. The town’s history therefore includes both 17th-century architectural changes and a precisely dated foundation in the 18th century.
At the Horno de Cuevas de Cañart, six pointed arches support a wooden structure with a gabled roof. Their shape is thus directly connected to the roof structure. The Ermita de San Blas contains a scale model of the town centre. If you would like to see the model, check visitor access in advance. Las Cuevas de Cañart is home to a Centro de Interpretación del patrimonio de las Cuevas.
Landscape, Excursions and Planning
The landscape adds a distinctive touch, too: Las Cuevas de Cañart is set in a beautiful landscape on the southern slope of the Sierra de la Garrocha. Above the San Juan waterfall is a small necropolis with graves carved into the rock; the necropolis may date back to medieval times.
From Las Cuevas de Cañart, you can visit places such as El Chorro on walks and excursions. Las Cuevas de Cañart also has a Via Ferrata (climbing route); the town is also part of a mountain biking route (BTT). There are several activities to choose from: an excursion to a destination, a via ferrata or a mountain biking route. If you plan to use the via ferrata, check the current access conditions in advance.
The ice house of Las Cuevas de Cañart offers another point of reference for planning excursions: it is just over a kilometre from the town. Access is difficult and involves an elevation change of 200 metres. So distance is not the only factor when assessing the excursion; access difficulty and elevation change should also be taken into account. As the level of difficulty may vary depending on conditions, check the current situation before your visit.
