Valacloche: Castle and Hiking Routes
Accommodation in Valacloche
Valacloche brings together the remains of its castle and several named routes. Valacloche Castle stands on a steep mountain in a strategic position above the Río Camarena. The trails offer different highlights: they lead to a viewpoint, to distinctive landscape features, and past a named structure.
The castle and its architectural features
The south side of the castle is formed by a roughly 50-metre-long masonry wall with loopholes. At its centre stands a rectangular tower about seven metres high, which is thought to have served as a keep. This possible function remains a hypothesis. For travellers interested in historic architecture, the exposed location, long southern wall, and central tower are some of the site’s specific features.
Trails, viewpoints, and cultural landscape
The Ruta del Castillo starts in Valacloche and leads to the castle viewpoint. Along this route, the Río Camarena is crossed, and the trail also runs alongside an acequia (irrigation channel). Via the Camino de las Cañadillas, the Ruta del Castillo reaches the petroglyphs of Valacloche, also known as holed stones. In this way, the route combines the castle with the river, an irrigation channel, and a named landscape feature.
The cultural landscape along the Ruta del Castillo also includes irrigation structures such as acequias and azudes (weirs). They have ethnographic value and have been maintained by farmers since ancient times. Alongside the castle, these structures give the route another focus: irrigation and the long-standing use of the landscape.
The Mirador del Castillo was established in 2019 on the highest part of the Loma de la Umbría. A post published in 2023 describes several information panels there, including one that offers a view of the castle, as well as a signposted path from the town centre. Check the signs on site if you plan to use the path.
The Ruta de la Vega del Turia and historic trails
The Ruta de la Vega del Turia offers a different route: it is a 25.5-kilometre crossing from Valacloche towards Castralvo. In the section near Valacloche, it passes the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto. When planning, you can therefore choose between the trail to the castle viewpoint and a crossing with a specified length and direction. The church is a named landmark along the route.
The town’s historic route also extends beyond the castle site. The road from Villel to Camarena passed through Cascante del Río and Valacloche, linking the Turia Valley with the Sierra de Javalambre. This historic connection places Valacloche on a route that linked the valley and the mountains.
Notice about access to the castle
A notice published in 2023 warned against entering the castle due to the risk of falling stones and unprotected steep drops, and recommended viewing the fortress from outside and at a safe distance. Check local conditions before approaching the ruins.
