Discover Monroyo
Accommodation in Monroyo
If you are looking for a hotel in Monroyo, the town’s architectural history, church art and landscape can offer different points of reference for planning your stay. Notable features include a castle with official cultural heritage status, historic town gates and houses, and routes to viewpoints and natural landmarks. The details below can help you explore these interests without combining them into a single sightseeing itinerary.
Castles, Town Gate and Town Hall
Under Aragon’s cultural heritage law, Castillo de la Muela de Monroyo is classified as one of the castles designated Bienes de Interés Cultural (Assets of Cultural Interest). Another testament to the town’s history is the Portal de Santo Domingo: it is the only surviving gate in the historic town wall. Its present structure dates from the mid-18th century, while its origins go back to the Middle Ages. The gate is also the starting point of the Monroyo–Fuente de la Mançana route.
Monroyo Town Hall is a Renaissance building dating from 1588, built on the remains of older Gothic buildings. The former prison was on the ground floor. It has three cells and was in use from the 16th century until the mid-20th century. As part of the Cárceles del MezquĂn-Matarraña route, the former prison has been adapted for tourist visits. Its history thus links the town hall’s use over several centuries with a present-day tourism route theme.
Church and Historic Houses
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates back to a Gothic structure from the 13th century, which underwent extensive alterations in the 16th century. Notable features include an organ built by Francisco Zurita in 1887 and a Romanesque baptismal font on display. It was carved from a single block of stone. These details illustrate distinct aspects of architectural and artistic history: the older Gothic structure, its later alteration and the surviving furnishings.
The manor houses also reflect different historical and architectural influences. The Marqués de Santa Coloma manor house has a white-plastered main façade, a wooden eaves cornice and a round-arched main entrance. Hostal Vell combines Gothic and Renaissance architecture; above its main entrance is a coat of arms believed to have belonged to Count Borrás. The house served as an inn from the Middle Ages until the mid-20th century, which gave it its popular name.
Other houses are associated with stories passed down over time. Casa Miquel-Joan preserves an intricately carved coat of arms that offers insight into the history and ancestry of the house’s former families. According to local tradition, Casa Caldú was the meeting place where the Order of Calatrava collected tithes. The account of Casa Raimundo is explicitly presented as local oral tradition: according to this account, the house was the residence of the commander of the Order of Calatrava. El Pou de la Vila is near the town center. The facility served to supply drinking water and for domestic purposes; a noria system allowed water to be drawn through taps.
Viewpoints and Routes
La Mola is a viewpoint above Monroyo. A short path, about 50 meters long, leads up to it. From there, views extend to the Puertos de Beceite massif and across pastures, fields and terraces. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before visiting. Santa Bárbara offers a different perspective on the landscape: its Baroque church stands in ruins on a flat hill with expansive panoramic views.
For hiking, the Monroyo–La Cerollera PR-TE-11 route is listed as eight kilometers long and easy. It passes through almond groves and pine forests. Another route description leads from Portal de Santo Domingo to the Fuente de la Mançana spring, which is beside a shelter, and to a pine described as the largest in the Monroyo district. Beside the La Consolación hermitage stands a large elm, cataloged as a unique tree. The GR-8 crosses the municipality of Monroyo on its way to the Maestrazgo and connects with the GR-7 in the Puertos de Beceite.
