Berge brings together historic buildings and hiking trails with festivals tied to specific dates in the annual calendar. When planning your trip, you can focus on architecture, one of the routes described here, or local traditions.

Architecture and history

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Mártir is a Baroque building with three naves, built in 1731. Its bell tower consists of four sections: the first is square and made of stone, while the sections above it are made of brick. The tower was built in the 1730s. In 2002, the church was classified as a listed cultural asset of Aragonese cultural heritage.

In Aragón, Torre Piquer is one of the castles considered assets of special cultural interest. Its square floor plan, considerable height and well-preserved portal with a round arch made of wedge-shaped stones define its architectural character. Those interested in sacred architecture will find a different type at the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña: this simple, vernacular-style building has a rectangular floor plan, a polygonal apse and a single nave.

The history of the area around Virgen de la Peña also reaches further back: the necropolis there is linked to Berge’s Visigothic origins. Within the town, the Capilla-Portal de la Virgen del Pilar stands opposite the town hall; the ascent route to the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña starts there. At the beginning of the route from Berge to the hermitage is also the complex comprising the Fuente, Abrevadero and Lavadero—a spring, watering trough and washhouse. It was probably built in 1817 and renovated in 1920.

Hiking trails, landscape and water

Morrón de Viñas reaches 1,038 metres and is the highest point in the Comarca Bajo Aragón. For hikers, the circular route Berge – Val de Nuez – Barranco del Redondo – Mas de Ruiz – Barranco Valdelcastillo – Camino de Seno – Virgen de la Peña – Berge offers a clearly defined option: it is 18.2 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. The linear Berge–Seno hiking route is 15.9 kilometres long and passes through the Sierra de los Caballos. The route types and distances provide a concrete basis for comparing the two hikes.

Another named trail is the PR-TE 59 “Sendero Berge – Torre Piquer – Alcorisa,” which has been catalogued and inventoried by the Government of Aragón as a tourist resource. For cycling, the Ruta BTT del Guadalopillo is described as running from Molinos to the mouth of the Guadalope near Calanda, passing through Molinos, Berge, Alcorisa, Foz Calanda and Calanda, and following the river course.

The Embalse de Gallipuén regulates the flow of the Guadalopillo and lies within the municipal areas of Alcorisa and Berge. A named motorcycle tour also ends there: “Los Oasis” runs from Alcañiz to Berge, with the reservoir as its endpoint. This means that, alongside hiking trails, a cycling route and a motorcycle tour offer different themes for planning a trip in the Berge area.

Festivals throughout the year

In Berge, San Antón is celebrated on 17 January with large bonfires and communal dinners for residents and visitors. The festival in honour of Virgen de la Peña takes place around 14 July and includes religious celebrations, musical performances, competitions and a communal meal. The Fiesta Mayor on 14 July also includes a pilgrimage to the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year; the detailed programme may vary.

Holy Week includes a brotherhood with drums and bass drums, as well as the traditional “Rompida de la Hora.” The celebrations in question resumed around 1991. Together with the festivals in January and July, these traditions provide different seasonal opportunities for a stay in Berge.
