Discover Cretas: History and Architecture
Accommodation in Cretas
Cretas’s cultural attractions range from a stone church with Gothic and Renaissance elements to Iberian archaeological sites and medieval funerary steles. The Plaza Mayor and several historic buildings also offer reasons to explore the town’s history in more depth. If you are looking for a hotel in Cretas, these different points of interest can help you plan your stay: you can focus on architecture, archaeology, routes and event dates.
Historic Buildings and Local History
The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora y de San Juan Bautista is a 16th-century stone church combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. An inscription on its façade dates from 1566 and names Xado as its builder. The church is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its construction date, inscription and protected status provide different points of reference for placing the building in its historical context.
The Plaza Mayor is also part of the town’s history: it dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Chapel of San Roque, in turn, was built in the 17th century in response to the plague epidemic in Cretas. It stands beside a former town-wall gate and has a hemispherical dome. These examples show that the town’s history is not confined to a single period.
Iberian History and Archaeological Traces
The Centre of the Iberians in Cretas focuses on the Ruta de los ĂŤberos in Bajo AragĂłn and offers an informative, interactive experience. Its permanent exhibition is divided into five rooms. Topics include writing, languages and Iberian epigraphy in Bajo AragĂłn. The layout thus brings together several ways of exploring Iberian history, from writing and language to the study of inscriptions.
There are also links to this history beyond the centre. The Iberian settlement of Els Castellans is part of the Iberos en el Bajo Aragón route. At Roca dels Moros in Cretas, Juan Cabré discovered three red deer depictions in 1903. A rock-art group in the Calapatar ravine near Cretas was discovered in 1908. These three locations represent different aspects of archaeological evidence and need not be treated as a single archaeological site.
Chapel, Cemetery and Historic Details
The Ermita de la Virgen de la Misericordia is protected as a Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés. It was built in the mid-16th century in the Levantine Gothic style, with decorative Renaissance elements. The pilgrimage to the ermita takes place on the second Saturday in May. Its architectural history and a recurring date are two distinct reasons to include the chapel in your travel plans.
Cretas’s restored medieval cemetery is open to visitors. It contains around 20 funerary steles dating from the 12th to the 15th century, including originals and faithful replicas. The approximate number and the mix of originals and reproductions are as much a part of the site as the steles’ broad date range.
Casa Castillo El Deume and Font de la Barra offer further historical details. Casa Castillo El Deume is a privately owned historic building; its features include pointed-arch entrances, a lobed window and loopholes. Font de la Barra is a historic well set below ground level, with ashlar walls and a paved access ramp. These different structures—from a private building to a sunken well—add specific architectural details to the broader stories of the churches and square.
Routes, Landscapes and Events
The Primers Pobladors route begins in the municipality of Cretas near the old VĂa Verde railway station and passes through the town centre. The route takes in landscapes featuring centuries-old olive trees, vines, peach and almond trees, and small wooded areas. Check trail conditions before setting out. Valderrobres-Cretas is one of the stops along the VĂa Verde that you can visit. The Mirador de los Puertos de Beceite is in the town of Cretas.
A recurring annual event is the Wine Fair and Medieval Market of Cretas. It takes place each spring, usually on Palm Sunday weekend. The medieval market recreates historic crafts and scenes from past eras. Check the dates before you travel if you would like to plan your stay around the event.
