Alloza Between Cultural Heritage and Landscape

Alloza sits on a small hill in a hollow shaped by olive groves. The town brings together significant buildings, insights into Iberian culture, and nature-focused attractions around the forest and reservoir. This offers different options for planning a trip: churches and historic architectural styles, archaeological exhibitions, or trails through the surrounding area.

Churches, Ice Houses, and Calvario

The Iglesia de la Concepción was built between 1550 and 1600. Its present-day building has three naves, four bays, and a rectangular chancel. The naves divide the church interior; the bays mark sections of its architectural structure. This makes it possible to describe both the building’s form and its period of construction in precise terms.

The Nevera de Alloza is a 17th-century ice house. It is about nine metres deep and about eight metres wide at the base of the dome. In Bajo Aragón, it is considered one of the finest examples of this type of structure. The two approximate measurements give an idea of the building’s different dimensions.

The Calvario de Alloza is considered one of the oldest Calvarios in Aragón. The path to the hermitage is lined with more than 200 cypress trees, some of which are estimated to be over 500 years old. The hermitage, or Church of Santo Sepulcro, dates from the early 18th century. The chapel features tile decoration on the floor and along the lower part of the walls, installed in 1788.

Iberian Culture and Art at the Centro El Castelillo

The Centro de Interpretación El Castelillo offers a wide-ranging insight into Iberian culture and its history, with a particular focus on artistic works. Several display cases contain an interesting collection of reproductions of finds from the nearby El Castelillo archaeological site. Here, the archaeological theme connects the objects on display with a broader overview of Iberian art. The Centro is on the road that runs through Alloza towards Oliete.

Another cultural highlight is the Parque Escultórico Los Barrancos: a cultural space fully integrated into nature, featuring works by recognised sculptors. Thus, the cultural attractions described in Alloza include both archaeological reproductions and artworks in a natural setting.

Trails, Forest, and the Embalse del Escuriza

From Alloza, a circular route signposted as an Aragon tourist hiking trail runs for 15 kilometres to the Embalse del Escuriza and back. The area around the reservoir is considered particularly suitable for observing waterbirds. If you plan to hike the route, it is advisable to check local route information before setting out.

The natural surroundings of Alloza can also be seen in the Pinar del Cabezo Galindo and Las Cinglas. Aleppo pine forest, Pinus halepensis, predominates there. The undergrowth includes kermes oak, juniper, hawthorn, thyme, and rosemary; various bird species are regularly found in the area. A route through the Pinar and Las Cinglas leads to the Mirador de Las Cinglas and then returns to Alloza via a paved track. Local signposting and the condition of the track may change; check them before setting out.

Traditions and Themed Routes

Local traditions include a festival in honour of Saint Blaise on 3 February and a pilgrimage on Whit Sunday to the Calvario hermitage, where a communal bean dish is part of the occasion. The celebrations for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 13 and 14 September include a colourful procession with floats. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these traditions, confirm the current schedule in advance.

The Ruta de la Minería connects Ariño, Alloza, and Andorra in the area known as Val de Ariño. Guided visits to the interpretation centre “Restauración ecológica de zonas mineras” are organised from the mining park. The centre lies between the municipalities of Andorra and Alloza and includes Corta Alloza and Corta Barrabasa. Check the current arrangements for guided visits before your trip.
