Ejulve – Hiking, Gorges and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Ejulve
Ejulve lies at the foot of the 1,600-meter-high Sierra de Majalinos. Named hiking trails lead through a variety of landscapes; there is also an ethnological museum, historic church architecture and places offering views of rock formations. If you are looking for a hotel in Ejulve, you can plan your stay around the routes and subjects you would like to explore. The specific trails and cultural sites offer different points of reference.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The SL-TE 29 Barranco Cueva Muñoz tourist hiking trail begins at MasĂa de los Barrancos in Ejulve and ends where the ravine meets the Guadalope River near Villarluengo. The route to the mills on the Guadalopillo starts elsewhere: it begins at the recreation area beside the river in the lower part of Ejulve and follows the GR-8.1 toward Molinos. The two trails therefore differ in their starting points and destinations: one runs between the masĂa and the river mouth, while the other begins at the recreation area and heads toward Molinos.
The easy PR-TE 91 hiking trail connects Ejulve with the narrow Caleja del Huergo in the upper reaches of the Barranco de Santa LucĂa. The terrain there is shady and lush, and several pools shape the ravine. The Caleja therefore offers a different point of reference from the route to the mills: its defining landscape features are the ravine, shade and pools. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Local history and church architecture
Casa La Reina is a traditional house in Ejulve that has been converted into an ethnological museum. Its collection includes objects donated by residents of Ejulve. The objects’ origins root the museum in local history and make the everyday lives of residents its focus.
The Church of Santa MarĂa la Mayor dates from the 16th century and is designed in the Gothic Renaissance style. Its tower is older, dating from the 14th or 15th century, and may have been built by the Order of Calatrava as a defensive structure to protect residents and monks. The tower is also included on the list of castles classified as Bienes de InterĂ©s Cultural (Assets of Cultural Interest). The church and tower can thus be distinguished by their different dates and the cautiously worded attribution.
Rock formations and birdlife
At Collado de Casa Mazuelos, you can view the Órganos de Montoro from the road between Ejulve and Villarluengo. Information panels there explain how the rock formations were created. The natural monument is home to numerous populations of cliff-dwelling birds, including particularly large numbers of griffon vultures.
A birdwatching route leads to the Cabezo Gordo viewpoint. From Ejulve, it can be reached by taking the A-1702 toward Villarluengo as far as kilometer 20. The views of the rock formations at the pass and the route to the viewpoint offer two different points of interest for nature enthusiasts: one focuses on geological formation, the other on birdwatching. MasĂas de Ejulve also refers to an area of 2,000 hectares within the municipality. This is on a different scale from the individual named trails and viewpoints.
