In San Agustín, you’ll find circular mountain biking and hiking routes, striking landscapes and historic buildings. To help you plan, the routes can be distinguished by length, mode of travel, and their scenic or historical highlights.

Circular routes with different highlights

“Los Caseríos de San Agustín” is a mountain biking circular route through part of the municipality. It starts and ends in San Agustín, is 23 kilometres long and takes an estimated 2 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, it passes several hamlets and springs. The estimated time will help you plan; also check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

“Circular Mas Blanco” is shorter at 13 kilometres and can be done on foot or by mountain bike. The route starts at the Ermita de la Virgen del Loreto in the southern part of San Agustín. It crosses the Maimona River via the Puente de Pradas and takes a detour to the Mirador de Estrellas at the entrance to the village. The Ermita de la Virgen del Pilar is also along the route. This lets you compare the two circular routes by distance and mode of travel, while the places mentioned along “Circular Mas Blanco” help shape the character of the ride.

“Loma de los Peiros” is another circular hiking route, featuring both natural and historic attractions. It passes through a dense holm oak forest and offers panoramic views over the Mijares River valley. Its scenery therefore combines woodland and far-reaching views, while “Los Caseríos” links several hamlets and springs on a mountain biking loop.

Gorge, woodland and far-reaching views

The Cañón del Mijares lies in the northern part of the municipality. Here, the river has carved a gorge with vertical walls more than 100 metres high. This distinctive river landscape adds its own scenic highlight to the woodland and valley views along the “Loma de los Peiros” route. If you choose your excursions based on natural scenery, you can focus on different impressions: the Mijares Gorge, the holm oak forest and the panoramic views over the river valley.

Chapels and castle at Pradas

The historic and monumental complex of Pradas is two kilometres from the village of San Agustín. The Ermita de la Virgen de Pradas is an early Gothic chapel with a wooden roof. Right next to it are the ruins of Castillo de Pradas, on a small hill bordered by the Barruezo stream. Castillo de Pradas is included on the list of castles designated as Bienes de Interés Cultural. The chapel and castle ruins offer different ways to explore architectural history and heritage.

The porch of the Ermita de Pradas serves as a rest area for pilgrims during the Romería. The pilgrimage takes place every year on a Sunday close to 22 May. Dates and arrangements may change, so check them before planning your visit. This allows you to take the date into account without assuming that the pilgrimage is available at any time.

Churches and rural life

San Agustín has two other historic religious buildings whose names and dates make them easy to distinguish: the Iglesia de San Agustín is a Baroque building from the 17th century. The Ermita de San Agustín, by contrast, is a Gothic-Mudéjar chapel from the 15th century. If you’re interested in architecture, their styles and centuries provide a concrete basis for comparing the two buildings.

The Museo de las Masías y Memoria Rural shows how the Masoveros used to live. It offers a glimpse into rural life in the past, complementing visits to the chapels and castle with a different perspective on cultural history. Check the museum website for opening hours before your visit.
