Cosenza: Old Town, Art and History
Accommodation in Cosenza
Cosenza’s historic settlement is linked to the Crati Valley and the hills at the confluence of the Crati and Busento rivers. The old town lies on the slope of Colle Pancrazio and stretches along the banks of the Crati. Monumental buildings, aristocratic palaces and churches shape the historic centre, along with its narrow, winding streets. In Cosenza, different traces of the city’s history thus come together in a compact urban space.
The Cathedral and Art in the City
In 2011, UNESCO recognised the Cathedral of Cosenza as a “testimony to a culture of peace.” Studies dating from the late 1940s place its construction in the mid-11th century; its style is classified as Cistercian Gothic. Those interested in the building will find both an early historical date and a specific architectural description. The Museo Diocesano di Cosenza is located between the Archbishop’s Palace and the cathedral, in the former diocesan seminary. Its exhibition brings together important and valuable objects from the cathedral and other churches in the area.
Among the Diocesan Museum’s notable works is a precious 12th-century staurotheke, or reliquary cross. According to tradition, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen donated the cross on the occasion of the cathedral’s consecration in 1222. The museum’s art gallery also houses Luca Giordano’s Immacolata from the 17th century. Elsewhere in the city, the MAB Museo all’Aperto Bilotti offers a distinctive feature of its own: an open-air art gallery on Cosenza’s main shopping street.
Museums, Digital Interpretation and Open-Air Culture
Consentia Itinera is the permanent offering of the museum of the same name. Seven rooms introduce visitors to Cosenza, its history, artistic heritage, myths, events and identity. A 45-minute tour explores the city’s origins through digital storytelling. It is complemented by a virtual flight over present-day Cosenza using VR headsets. The experience thus combines historical themes with a digital perspective on the present.
Villa Rendano also offers interactive museum activities and workshops to suit different needs. These include board games, treasure hunts, art projects, theatre performances and outdoor activities. As individual programmes may change, it is advisable to check what is currently on offer when making specific plans.
The museum rooms in Castello Svevo di Cosenza regularly host exhibitions by young artists when major exhibitions of national or international interest are taking place. The garden within the walls is fully accessible during the spring and summer months. With its covered stage and sound and lighting system, it serves as an open-air theatre for festivals, event series, readings and performances. Two terraces at the castle offer panoramic views over the city and the entire valley. The castle can be reached by car or public transport; check current services when planning your journey.
Getting There and Culinary Traditions
By car, you can reach Cosenza via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway and the Cosenza exit; then follow the signs to the historic centre. From Cosenza railway station, you can reach the city centre by taxi in about ten minutes or by taking city bus lines 15, 16, 17 or 27. As bus services may change, it is a good idea to check current connections before travelling. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first consider whether historic architecture, collections or cultural events will shape your stay.
Cosenza’s culinary traditions include fusilli, pasta e patate ara tijeddra, fried peppers and potatoes, broccoli rabe with sausage, and lagane e ciciari. They are usually served with high-alcohol-content red and white wines. These dishes offer further insight into local food culture and complement a stay that may also centre on the city’s history, art and cultural activities.
