Montegiordano combines coastal attractions with archaeological traces, local history, and public art. If you are looking for a hotel, deciding what you want to focus on during your trip can be a good place to start: should the beaches of the Marina, the history of Menzinara, or the murals shape your stay? You can also include several of these themes in your travel plans.

Landscape, Archaeology, and Coast

The locality of Menzinara lies on the summit of an isolated hill, flanked by waterways and overlooking a wide stretch of the Ionian coast. An archaeological excavation uncovered a Lucanian farmhouse there, which was in use throughout the second half of the 4th century BC. Its square floor plan measured 22 meters on each side. Seven rooms of different sizes were arranged around an open courtyard measuring 5.80 × 5.80 meters. These dimensions give a sense of the site as a whole: they show a complex with a clearly defined outer shape and a structured interior.

Montegiordano Marina is 8 km from Montegiordano Centro and has pebble and sandy beaches. The Marina therefore offers a different focus from hilly Menzinara: beaches here, archaeological history and views over the Ionian coast there. When planning your trip, you can consider the coast and culture as separate themes.

Buildings and Religious History

Palazzo Solano dates back to the founding of Montegiordano; the de Martino family’s coat of arms is preserved above its portal. The first Cappella della Madonna del Carmine was also built by the Barons de Martino. The palace and chapel reflect the family’s connection in different ways: through the coat of arms above the portal and their role as the chapel’s builders.

Il Calvario is a monument with five crosses, probably built in the first half of the 19th century. The Via Matris, a religious observance held on the Friday before Palm Sunday in honor of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, is also part of the area’s religious history. Seven crosses along the outer edge of the town led from the destroyed old parish church to Il Calvario.

The grància in the locality of Caprara is considered a characteristic feature of early Cistercian agriculture. A chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel survives there, with its walls still standing; animal shelters are partly attached to it. Agricultural and religious elements come together here. This site adds an agrarian dimension to the town’s buildings and places of remembrance.

Murals and Walking Route

Montegiordano’s Paese dipinto comprises more than 200 murals by local artist Franco La Teana. They depict everyday life, proverbs, family memories, and faces from the community, and tell the story of the town’s history and identity. If you are interested in this visual side of local history, you can follow a short walking route past the murals, starting from the main piazza. This lets you explore the murals as a connected theme rather than focusing on individual images.
