Belmonte Calabro: Historic Center, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Belmonte Calabro
If you are looking for a hotel in Belmonte Calabro, start by asking which aspect of the town interests you: its castle-related history, its religious buildings or its connection to nature. The historic center lies on a rocky hill and offers a clear starting point for planning your trip: its lanes, walls and buildings tell the story of different periods in the town’s history. The Veri River and the Oasi Blu Isca marine area add landscape and nature to the picture.
Historic Center and Architectural History
The historic center developed around the castle. Old houses and narrow, winding lanes with steps shape the townscape. Much of the old town is still surrounded by defensive walls. Historically, three gates led into the town and to the castle: Porta di Mare, Porta di Terra and a side gate to the north. This northern side gate is still visible.
The architectural history of the Palazzo del Rivellino also reflects the town’s fortifications. The palazzo was built in 1627 as a fortification around an existing square tower. Torino Ravaschieri had built that tower in 1579. The two dates distinguish the older tower from the later structure built around it.
Another architectural detail can be found at the Mausoleo Michele Bianchi: it includes a 35-meter-high column with an internal spiral staircase leading to an observation terrace. The mausoleum can therefore be described not only by its height, but also by the staircase inside.
Churches, Monastery and Museum
The Chiesa del Purgatorio dates from the 14th century and served as the parish church of Belmonte Calabro until 1585. It houses a blue silk banner shaped like a triangular sail. The banner is associated with the Rosary procession of a Rosary confraternity made up of fishermen. The church, its former status as a parish church and the banner each offer a different insight into the town’s history.
The Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta is a 16th-century religious building beside the castle esplanade. An oil painting by Francesco Basile, dating from 1794–1795, hangs above the main altar. It depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Both the building’s location beside the esplanade and its dated artwork are notable features.
The Convento dei Cappuccini was built by Maria Ravaschieri in 1606. Features recorded at the convent include a cloister with a colonnade and vaulted ceilings, a fountain in the center of the courtyard, and a portico with two old sundials. The Chiesa del Carmine is associated with a monastery dating from 1562. Beneath the floor of its apse is a crypt dating from 1586, containing the tomb of Torino and the first Ravaschieri.
The Centro Culturale Informatizzato combines library and museum functions. The municipal museum commemorates the history and culture of the people of Belmonte Calabro. It adds another way to explore local history alongside the town’s buildings.
River, Marine Area and Local Product
The Veri River is seven kilometers long. It rises in the hilly hinterland, crosses terraced landscapes and reaches the sea. This short river course links different types of scenery, from its hilly source through the terraces to its mouth at the sea.
The Oasi Blu Isca marine area near Belmonte Calabro offers another connection with nature. It lies around the Scogli di Isca, was established in 1991 and is managed by the WWF and its associated CEAM. The river and marine area thus offer two different points of interest for planning a trip that takes in not only the old town, but also the surrounding landscape and nature.
The Pomodoro di Belmonte is also part of the town’s local character. This typical local product is protected by a De.C.O. designation. It is a distinct culinary attraction alongside the town’s historical and landscape features.
