When planning a stay in Aieta, you can choose between cultural history, distinctive local details, and a hiking route. The buildings, artworks, and route information can help you decide whether Renaissance history, religious art, or a trip toward Monte Curatolo best suits your travel plans.

Palace and religious art

A landmark of Renaissance history is the Palazzo rinascimentale Martirano–Spinelli in the historic center. The Marchesi Cosentino had it built in the 16th century. In 1913, the palazzo was declared a national monument; since 1980, it has belonged to the municipality of Aieta. The Mu.Vi.D’A. is also housed in the palazzo. Visitors are expected to purchase a ticket in advance to enter the palazzo. Check the current conditions before your visit.

The Chiesa Santa Maria della Visitazione was built over a small Norman church. On November 8, 1530, it became Aieta’s only parish church. Its apse contains an altarpiece of the Visitation, created by Neapolitan painter Fabrizio Santafede in 1576. The Bossi organ was delivered to the church on August 19, 1673. Thus, the church brings together its building history, a precise date in its parish history, and two artworks and furnishings that can be dated.

Local details and a geological perspective

The historic center has stone portals carved by local craftspeople. Vico dei Baci offers a different kind of measure: the street is only 52 centimeters wide and is considered one of the narrowest in Italy. The portals point to skilled craftsmanship, while the narrow alley is memorable for its specific measurement.

Aieta also has a geological dimension: outcrops of the Pollino–Ciagola unit, with carbonate slope deposits, are found in the inhabited area. This adds a geological perspective to the history of the buildings and the town.

Sights and Route 665

Other places worth seeing in Aieta include the church of the Convent of the Friars Minor Observants of Saint Francis of Assisi, the old water mills, and the medieval bridge. These buildings and places offer a different focus from the Renaissance art in the palazzo and parish church. If you would like to plan a hike as well as explore the historical heritage, Route 665 runs from Piazza Lomonaco to Monte Curatolo. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Plan for an August event

Aieta’s Sagra del Fusillo is associated with August and includes an exhibition of local products. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the date for your intended travel year in advance. This lets you schedule your stay around the event rather than assuming a date that has not been confirmed.
