Marina di Sibari lies on the Ionian Sea. White beaches with very fine sand and green pine forests define the area. Alongside its coastal scenery, there are other aspects you can take into account when planning your trip: the ancient history of Sibari and wildlife watching at the Foce del Crati.

Coast, forest and landscape

The beaches are white, with very fine sand, and pine forests surround Marina di Sibari. The coast and forest are therefore two distinct features of the local landscape. A more precise geographical reference is provided by the ZSC “Casoni di Sibari”: it lies between the built-up area of Marina di Sibari and the Canale degli Stombi. This makes it possible to pinpoint the ZSC using two specific reference points.

The mini-golf area at Sybaris Explora is set in greenery among eucalyptus trees and centuries-old olive trees. This tree-lined setting differs from the pine forests surrounding Marina di Sibari: the two places described feature different tree species. The mini-golf area thus adds its own green setting to the landscape highlights.

The history of Sibari

The Archaeological Park of Sibari lies on the Ionian coast of Calabria, a short distance from the mouth of the Crati River. Its history dates back to the founding of the Achaean colony of Sybaris in 720 BC. The Greek city was followed by Hellenistic Thurii and Roman Copia. The centres of these cities partially overlap the ruins of the Greek city. This sequence reveals several successive ancient urban phases, rather than reducing the history to a single name.

The Museo archeologico nazionale della Sibaritide displays archaeological finds from the Sibaritide, an area that has been centred on the city of Sibari since ancient times. Among the named finds, the museum particularly highlights the “toro cozzante”, which it describes as its most impressive find. In exploring the area's history, you can therefore encounter both the development of the ancient cities and a specific object from the museum's collection.

Wildlife watching

At the Foce del Crati, visitors can observe numerous animal species firsthand. Squirrels have also been sighted repeatedly in the pine forest of Marina di Sibari; one report dates from December 2025. However, a sighting cannot be guaranteed on any particular visit. These observations are therefore a possible nature-related activity, but not an experience that can be planned with certainty.

Sibari railway station is the nearest station to the Lago di Tarsia and Foce del fiume Crati nature reserves. This railway connection applies to the two named reserves and is a specific reference point if you are interested in visiting them.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

You can reach Marina di Sibari via the Sibari–Firmo exit and the SS 534 and SS 106 roads. Road conditions may change, so check the current route before setting out. This lets you plan your journey using the stated access roads without relying on a fixed travel time.

Wildlife watching offers another possible focus. Then check the location and details of each hotel against your own criteria.
