Corigliano Calabro offers several ways to enjoy a stay: the Castello Ducale, historic churches, art collections and routes along the Cammino di San Francesco di Paola. There is also a walk along the seafront promenade in Marina di Schiavonea. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish whether you are more interested in architectural history and art or the stages of a pilgrimage route.

Castello Ducale and Art

The Castello Ducale di Corigliano Calabro was built in 1073 as a military fortress. Following extensive alterations, the Museo Castello Ducale was inaugurated in 2002 and opened to the public under this name. The museum includes the monks’ prison, 19th-century kitchens, the Chapel of Sant’Agostino, the Salone degli Specchi, the dining room, the main tower and the moat.

The Pinacoteca di arte moderna Nelle sale del Castello is also part of the castle’s cultural profile. It displays six large-format paintings; according to the current state of documentary research, not all of them have been attributed. The collection concludes with the triptych “Madonna delle Rose” by Domenico Morelli. It was probably commissioned by Baron Luigi Compagna. The tentative attribution of the commission is part of the work’s history and should not be confused with a confirmed commissioning.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The Torre di Schiavone, also known as Torre Cupo, served as a coastal defence lookout and is part of the 16th-century fortifications. It is also of historical and artistic interest. In the historic centre, the 15th-century Ponte Canale connects the castle hill with the hill of the San Francesco complex. The two structures thus served different purposes: the Torre was part of the coastal defences, while the Ponte Canale connects two hills.

The churches add buildings from different periods to these historic landmarks. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the late 10th or early 11th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio di Padova was established in 1459 by Luca Sanseverino, Prince of Bisignano. A considerably later building is the Chiesa di Santa Chiara, also known as “delle Monachelle”: it was built between 1757 and 1762. Its furnishings include a painting by Nicola Domenico Menzele dating from 1762 and an organ dating from 1735.

Associated with San Francesco di Paola is the Romitorio di San Francesco, a small church commemorating his stay in a hut during his visit to Corigliano from 1476 to 1478. The commemoration refers to his stay in the hut, not to a stay in the church. Together with the San Francesco complex, which the Ponte Canale connects to the castle hill, the Romitorio is a separate point of interest for those interested in local religious history.

Pilgrimage Routes and Schiavonea

Two registered routes of the Cammino di San Francesco di Paola can be distinguished by direction, total length and number of stages. The Via dei Monasteri runs from Paterno Calabro to Corigliano Calabro. It is 135 kilometres long and comprises six stages. The Via per la Francia, by contrast, starts in Corigliano Calabro and runs for 71.6 kilometres over three stages to Monte Sant’Angelo near Castrovillari. Corigliano is therefore the destination on the Via dei Monasteri and the starting point on the Via per la Francia. The distances and number of stages provide a concrete comparison of the two routes without requiring any assumptions about walking times.

In Marina di Schiavonea, the seafront promenade offers an opportunity for a walk. Another way to experience the area is the Sagra del pesce azzurro in Schiavonea, where visitors can sample local fish specialities, from fried dishes to more elaborate meals. The festival is associated with early August; its date may vary from year to year. If you are planning your visit around it, check the relevant event dates in advance.
