Scenery at Lago di Mormanno
The small artificial Lago di Mormanno is located in the Pantano area within the municipality of Mormanno. It lies in the mountain landscape of Pollino National Park, measures 780 metres long and 200 metres wide, and was created using water from the Battendiero River as a reservoir for a hydroelectric power station.
At Lago di Mormanno, a 1,500-metre-long cycle path connects the districts of Pantano and Vallera. The lake is home to significant bird species, including migratory birds such as cormorants and black-winged stilts, as well as resident birds such as grey herons and mallards. For nature lovers, both the landscape and the different classifications of the species mentioned offer tangible points of interest.
Viewpoints and remembrance
The Faro Votivo stands in the panoramic setting of Torretta and can be seen from every corner of Mormanno. It preserves mementos and memories associated with eleven recipients of Italy’s Gold Medal for Military Valour.
Montagnella is a public viewpoint and is protected as a site of landscape interest. Its role as a viewpoint is thus combined with its designation as a protected landscape site.
Chiesa Santa Maria del Colle is associated with a succession of three religious buildings; the oldest is believed to date from the 14th century. A report published in September 2023 introduces MormArt – Museo del Tempo as a permanent exhibition that connects the past and present through remembrance and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Events and regional cuisine
The Rievocazione della Donazione del 1101 reenacts the donation of the Castrum of Miromanum, together with its associated lands and rights, in 1101. The Sagra popolare dei Quartieri takes place as part of this reenactment, offering typical regional dishes.
The Perciavutti includes the Palio delle Botti, a race that tests skill and speed. Four town districts push a large barrel for about one kilometre along Mormanno’s main street. This competition therefore puts both skill and speed centre stage.
A regional speciality is the Bocconotto di Mormanno. This shortcrust pastry is available in oval, round or basket shapes; its filling can vary according to taste, the creativity of the pastry chefs and consumer preferences.
